15-10-2012 at 01:00: Road Whales… Drive Me Crazy!

One of the largest creatures on the planet, the whale is highly admired for being able to travel from point A (food trough) to point B (lover’s lane) and back again.  Their travel happens ever so slowly, methodically, and takes up a large slice of the ocean to make this migration happen.  Big and beautiful, they don’t let anything get in their way and they certainly don’t let anything have right of way over them.

There is an automotive creature you may have witnessed on a daily basis that travels with the same gusto and pace.  While it is not as big as some of the other road creatures, it does seem to possess similarities to its distant aquatic cousin called Willy.  This majestic beast goes by the land name of Toyota Camry.

The majority of these road whales can be seen in their natural habitat disguised as taxis, fleet and government specials or even as grey nomad travel capsules.  They float over multiple lanes without a care in the world.  They also have an environmentally sustainable edge to them as they don’t seem to want to waste energy on such things as indicator bulbs going on and off.  Also conserved in the road whales daily travels are the accelerator pedal and fuel, both of which are used very sparingly and grudgingly by these suburban inhabitants.

Just like the protected ocean based whales travelling up and down our coastline, it is recommended that you don’t get too close to the road whale, for fear of a sideswipe attack. Perhaps an even more dreaded fate is approaching one of these fearsome creatures from behind which will see you locked in a road-whale-tail-block-manoeuvre.  This mistake will have examining the rear end of one of these road whales for quite a long time as your short five kilometre journey will now be taking you the best part of two hours.

Amazingly in other automotive markets, this road whale is quite the speedy beast, even a land shark; just Google ‘Camry NASCAR’ and you will see some fine racing specimens of the Camry floating around that might just change your opinions on said road whale.

However on the shores of this fine country we have been given a family of slower, less speedy road whales that don’t seem to be able to be set free by its creator.  The reasons for this aren’t exactly clear.  One automotive anthropological theory is the fear that souping up the Camry and marketing it to a younger audience may offend its even larger, but not as popular fellow whale the Aurion.

This white whale was launched with much fanfare, but hasn’t won a great deal of die hard fans. While the Aurion does have solid sales numbers, particularly with fleet buyers, it has now swum into dangerous territory with a recent redesign.  The Aurion now looks remarkably close to its cousin the Camry, albeit with a higher price tag.

A question for Toyota, why not focus on making one good road shark, rather than having two road whales? Road whales… they drive me crazy!
