16-10-2012 at 11:00: Ambrose Charlotte Report

Marcos Ambrose’s frustrating run has continued in the latest round of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, with the Stanley Ford Fusion registering a 33rd place finish at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

A restart pile up on lap 15 of the 334 saw the front and rear of the Richard Petty Motorsports machine receive significant damage, which had an adverse effect on the car for the remainder of the race.

A highlight for Ambrose however was leading a pair of laps in the early running, the eighth race this season the Australian has been at the pointy end of the field.

“It’s disappointing. After the early accident, we were never in the fight,” Ambrose said.

“The Stanley team are working hard, but at the moment we don’t have the results to show for it.

“We’ve got an extended week at Kansas coming up.

“It’s a new track surface and a fresh start for everyone. We’ll turn things around there.”

After starting from 18th position, Ambrose slid back in the early running after being caught out high on the banking, before settling in 25th position when Matt Kenseth brought out an early caution flag.

On the restart, a major pile up as the pack came to greet the green flag involved much of the field.

Ambrose’s car came out worse for wear in the nose-to-tail melee, with the team swinging into action three times during the caution to rectify the damage.

Taking in the following green flag from 33rd position, Ambrose powered straight back into 24th place, which became 22nd when the smoking car of Paul Menard brought out the third caution on lap 36.

Staying out under the caution, Ambrose saw in the green flag from second position, but swiftly passed Brad Keselowski to take the lead and a bonus championship point.

Eventually heading to the pits on lap 74, Ambrose found himself in 19th position on lap 95.

A long stretch of clean running saw Ambrose return to the Richard Petty Motorsports pit crew on lap 124.

Unfortunately the handling of the car continued to deteriorate as the stint wore on, with Ambrose giving the wall a solid brush on lap 142.

Ambrose battled through a series of lurid slides in the ensuing laps, before heading to the garage for extended repairs on lap 146.

Returning to the track 27 laps down on the race leaders, Ambrose picked up a pair of positions in the run to the chequered flag to be classified in 33rd.

The race turned into one of fuel economy, with Clint Bowyer claiming the victory over Denny Hamlin and Jimmie Johnson, with only six cars finishing on the lead lap.
