02-09-2012 at 23:00: Toyota Scores In Second Outing

The World Endurance Championship is one Toyota are working hard to be victorious in and with the six hour race of Silverstone in Great Britain the team were able to score a podium in only their second outing.

Driving the TS030 Hybrid, which made its debut at the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans race in June, ran reliably and displayed strong pace to finish in second position.

The experienced line-up of Alex Wurz, Nicolas Lapierre and Kazuki Nakajima shared the driving duties as they took the fight to their rivals in an exciting race that went down to the wire with the Audi R18 e-tron quattro taking victory by less than a second.

Highlights included Wurz taking the race lead after just 21 minutes and Lapierre setting the fastest lap of the race on lap 139. As well as the fastest lap, the Toyota drove away with the fastest outright speed of 203.8 mph (326.08 kph).

Former Formula One driver Wurz said the result confirmed Toyota’s rapid progress with its TS030 Hybrid since the last outing at Le Mans.

“This is only our second race, eight months after our first roll-out, and we are fighting against a competitor who has more than a decade of experience,” he said.

Team president Yoshiaki Kinoshita said he was buoyed by the car’s combination of pace and mechanical reliability.

“Not only did we prove the speed of the TS030 Hybrid by setting the fastest lap of the race and finishing on the podium in just our second race, we also had a completely trouble-free race,” he said.

The TS030 Hybrid is Toyota’s successor to the TS010 and TS020 race cars that participated at Le Mans with podium success in the 1990s.

The 2012 THS-R (Toyota Hybrid System – Racing) powertrain features a 3.4-litre normally-aspirated V8 petrol engine and hybrid system with capacitor storage.

As with Toyota’s hybrid road cars, energy is regenerated under braking and the TS030 Hybrid can operate in electric-only mode, achieving zero emissions and zero fuel consumption.

Toyota Racing will next compete at the Six Hours of Sao Paulo in Brazil on September 15, the fifth event of the 2012 World Endurance Championship.
