03-09-2012: MG Car Clubs Ironman

A long time tradition of the MG Car Club of Qld is to test the endurance of competitors and officials by holding an annual Ironman weekend.

The Ironman name could be mixed up with the super fit guys and girls that do all the hard yards on the beaches of the world but this event is all to do with driving. The weekend, September 7-9, is composed of four events starting on the Friday night.

A night navigation run, or known in the racing world as a nav run, starts the weekend off. The nav run consists of drivers teaming up in road registered vehicles and covering a set course with limited information and extra points for answering questions over the run.

Saturday consists of two events run over one day. A Motorkhana, which tests drivers against the clock in a first gear special course and a sprint that puts the driver on track where their best time counts towards outright victory. Both of these races are held at Norwell’s Holden Driver Training centre.

Sunday’s completion heads to the infamous Mt Cotton Hillclimb track. Over a distance of less than a kilometer, drivers put everything they have on the line to be the fastest.

The winner of the fastest time of day at the Hillclimb receives the Bob Cossor Memorial Trophy.

Spectators are invited to the Hillclimb on Sunday where entry is free. Competition will begin at 8.30.
