10-09-2012: Infiniti is Now in Oz

The month of September will be one to remember as not only did a new manufacture in the form of Opel begin selling cars for the first time in Australia, but a second brand, Infiniti has now officially opened in this great country.

The performance luxury automotive brand from Japan has made two of the models in their range available for sale. The Infiniti FX is the first model and is a performance crossover, or more commonly known as an SUV.

The FX is a radical expression of sport and utility, combining exceptional levels of power, refinement and driving exhilaration with head-turning styling. Its advanced sports platform is matched to a choice of three engines.

The first and most powerful is a 287kW/500Nm 5.0-litre 32-valve DOHC V8 petrol engine with VVEL (for Variable Valve Event & Lift) which powers the FX50S model.

Infiniti’s patented VVEL system continuously adjusts valve event and lift amounts, enabling higher fuel efficiency with higher torque and improved emissions over conventional variable valve designs. The VVEL intake camshafts, which feature continuously variable lift control teamed with a Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS), allows for a 6,800 rpm redline.

The next engine in the line-up is a 235kW/360Nm 3.7-litre 24-valve DOHC petrol V6 in the FX37. This V6 engine features an aluminium cylinder block and heads, an electronically controlled throttle system and has been tuned specifically for use in the FX37.

This advanced V6’s design also includes a symmetric twin ram air intake system that reduces airflow resistance, Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS), a silent timing chain for quiet operation, Teflon-coated lightweight pistons, a dual exhaust system with equal length exhaust manifolds and low muffler exhaust pressure to help improve engine breathing. The FX37’s exhaust note has been tuned for a sporty, high-performance sound.

The final engine in the range is the 3.0-litre 175kW/550Nm 24-valve DOHC turbo-diesel V6 in the FX30d. Using a cylinder block cast from compacted graphite iron (CGI) with aluminium cylinder heads. Its variable nozzle turbocharger and piezo-injection technology contribute to its maximum power level.

Each engine is paired with a standard-fitment seven-speed automatic transmission featuring Adaptive Shift Control (ASC) and solid magnesium paddle shifters with no option of a manual.

Infiniti’s second model to come to Australia is the M sedan. The M sedan is offered in three models, M37, M30d and M35h hybrid and has three torque-rich engines to suit.

The M37 feature Infiniti’s advanced VVEL (Variable Valve Event & Lift) system. The efficient and torque-rich M30d delivers an impressive 550 Nm from as low as 1,750 RPM and the dynamic M35h hybrid has earned the title of the World’s Fastest Accelerating Full Hybrid Production Car with its impressive peak power levels, 225 kW from its petrol V6 engine and a further 50 kW from its electric motor; combined peak power level of 268kW, and high torque petrol V6: 350 Nm; electric motor: 270 Nm. All models are equipped with a smooth-shifting seven-speed automatic transmission.

The arrival of the first shipment of Infiniti cars is a milestone in the company’s extensive Australian market introduction program, which has been tailored to establish the performance luxury marque as a long-term fixture in the Australian luxury car market.

And the results have been immediate. Many local luxury car buyers have been keen to get behind the wheel of an Infiniti and the company’s first local customer deliveries have already commenced.

In fact, the first Australian-delivered Infiniti to hit local roads was a 287kW FX50S in moonlight white. The stunning performance crossover was delivered by Infiniti Centre Sydney and was last seen turning heads in traffic.

More customer deliveries are underway as Infiniti’s first Australian retail centres continue to work through the brand’s local database of the more than 6,500 people who have already registered their interest in the Infiniti marque.

Kevin Snell, General Manager of Infiniti Cars Australia, says Infiniti has received a strong local welcome and brings an ethos of quality and care that Australian luxury car buyers are certain to enjoy.

“Australian customers now have a new choice in performance luxury,” he said.

“Infiniti has established a strong reputation for delivering exhilarating driver’s cars that feature exciting designs and leading-edge technology along with exceptional customer hospitality that makes luxury car ownership special. My team and I are thrilled to make these available to Australian luxury car buyers.”

Snell is grateful for the local reception Infiniti has received. His team has enjoyed a multitude of messages from local buyers and fans of the Infiniti brand.

“To everyone who has waited patiently for Infiniti’s official Australian arrival, and to the thousands who have registered their interest in becoming a customer, thank you for your warm welcome.”
