13-08-2012 at 01:00: Sunday Funday

The tenth annual Mopar Sunday to be held in Queensland went off with a roaring success on Sunday July 29. Unlike previous years the weather stayed cool and fine and drivers and spectators alike enjoyed a Mopar fuelled day sponsored by Albion Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge and Leo Muller Chrysler Jeep and Dodge.

The entries for the drags were high and ranged from standard current model Chrysler 300’s to old skool Valiant Chargers and a number of Jeeps. A few interesting editions to the drags was a Mopar powered Datsun Bluebird and Mitsubishi Lancer, both failing to impress the serious of drag racers.

One of the most impressive cars to hit the quarter mile was the nitro funny car of Christine Steffans, nicked named Crocadile because of its paint scheme and the fact the front opens up. On Steffans first pass of the day she hit an impressive 282.72mph (454.99 kph) in a pass time of only 5.26 seconds.

This was the cars best ever pass and it did not go any faster the rest of the day. On this run, the shoots failed to open but with sheer luck Steffans was able to pull the car up in the gravel before hitting the tyre barrier at the end.

The lowest reaction time of the day went to Mark Ayson who was super-fast and left the line at only 0.004 seconds after the lights went green. Another award was given to the person the judges saw as the day’s craziest driver. The Mopar Mad Men was given to Sam La Spina.

Running near the gates was where the words of one were turned into true numbers, the Dyno Shootout. In the eight-cylinder un-assisted class it was the 2011 winner Gregory Behrendorff in his VJ Ute with a total of 303.1 hp. The six-cylinder class, Dunnett took the gold with 236.6hp coming out of his Val Ute.

The Surf City Garage Show ‘n’ Shine was a shining example of the passion people still have for Mopars and keeping them looking in pristine condition. With many classes contested it was a challenge for officials to choose the cars to be victorious.

The event wrapped up at around 4pm in the afternoon and Willowbank Raceway said goodbye to the Mopar community for another 12 months.
