20-08-2012 at 01:00: O’Shannessy Returns to Sepang

Australian racer Chris O’Shannessy will soon return to the world famous Sepang International Circuit to again contest the Malaysia Merdeka Endurance Race Sepang 12 Hour International, sharing the drive of the Wing Hin Motorsport/TRD Kuala Lumpur Toyota Altezza. The team are looking to build upon their 2011 third in class, adding a brand new vehicle, the much hyped Toyota 86, to the two car outfit.

The 5.5kilometre circuit, with its 15 challenging turns, will again play host to 12 hours of non-stop action as three classes, more than fifty entries and 150 drivers battle it out for the honours of the 2012 MMER event.

With Wing Hin Motorsport having been flat out preparing the TRD KL Toyota Altezza for its return attack, the team’s Toyota 86 will be making its first endurance racing appearance at Sepang under the watchful eyes of TRD Japan who will manage both cars, utilising the new Toyota 86 as an R&D exercise to develop parts in the most gruelling endurance event Asia has to offer.

Building on their 2010/11 momentum, O’Shannessy and the Wing Hin Motorsport/TRD team are ready to take all they have learnt over their years of endurance racing, and are hopeful to take the next steps and move further into the podium positions this time around, with O’Shannessy explaining,

“I’m really looking forward to being back in the driver’s seat and back with such a great team. We’ve had some success last year, and are confident there’s more to come.

“Testing commences at the Sepang circuit on the 27th (August) in the build-up to the official event starting on the 29th (August).

“We’ve completed extensive developments on the car for this year’s effort, with the inclusion of a few ‘nice to have’ items such as a driver cool suit system and a brand new sequential gearbox, along with a raft of other new components.

“Personally I’m never one to make the big calls early so I’m not going to ‘put the mockers’ on us, suffice to say we’re always learning new things about the car and new ways to extract a little more speed from what is already a great package and an absolute pleasure to drive.”

With the MMER Sepang International 12 Hour event entering its 13th year in 2012, it will again see international teams, drivers, crew, and sponsors from all corners of the globe vying to take their entry all the way through the gruelling 12 hours, 1500kilometres, 260 laps and 9300 gear changes of endurance racing in the hope to stand victorious.
