20-08-2012: Milton Runs City2surf with Innovative Carbon Crutches

Toyota’s Australian Ambassador and champion athlete Michael Milton successfully completed last Sunday’s 14km City2Surf fun run in Sydney using cutting-edge running crutches.

Milton, who won four gold medals at the Salt Lake Winter Paralympics in 2002, ran the event as a warm-up and fine-tuning exercise ahead of the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final in Auckland this October.

The crutches were made from super lightweight, ultra strong carbon fibre with input from carbon specialist Raoul Luescher, and previously senior technical officer at the Australian Institute of Sport.

The crutches’ advanced prosthetic feet were made by Ossur, the same brand that South African Olympian Oscar Pistorius used in the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Milton said the City2Surf was the ideal way to test the crutches ahead of more competitive outings.

“The City2Surf has a good mix of flat and hilly roads and the crutches felt fantastic,” he said.

“I stopped halfway through to do a TV interview but I managed to do the whole thing in about an hour and a half, which I’m happy with.

“I’m hopeful the crutches will help me improve on my time from last year’s Triathlon World Championships, where I came fourth.

“After the City2Surf I’m feeling really good about my chances.”

Alongside his gold medal success, Milton holds the title as the fastest Australian snow skier with the 213.65km/h mark he set in 2006.

He has also tasted significant success in cycling, with victory in the 3000m Individual Pursuit at the Australian Track Cycling Championships in February 2007, amongst a host of other achievements.
