20-08-2012: Lexus IS F Peaks at Pikes

A first attempt at any event is a challenge, but a first attempt at the infamous Pikes Peak hill climb is not one to be taken lightly. Lexus not only finished the event for the first time but took out second in class with its IS F CCSR.

Testing man and machine, the race is run over a 20-kilometre course consisting of 156 turns – concluding at 14,110 feet above sea level.

The thin air at the summit of Pikes Peak robs vehicles of almost 30 per cent of engine power.

Piloted by US racer Ken Gushi, the IS F CCSR completed the feat in 11 minutes, 35.17 seconds – finishing second in class behind a lightweight V12 race car.

The Lexus IS F CCSR, which debuted at the Tokyo Auto Salon in 2010, features a number of modifications from the standard IS F road car to enhance performance and satisfy racing safety regulations.

These include lightweight carbon fibre bodywork and interior details as well as polycarbonate windows, helping to reduce the standard vehicle’s weight by 314kg.

It also has a reinforced monocoque with roll cage, racing brake package, modified race suspension and racing exhaust system.

The IS F CCS-R is powered by the 2UR-GSE 5.0-litre V8 of the IS F that develops 311kW and 505Nm of torque, mated to an eight-speed Sport Direct Shift automatic transmission with paddle shift.
