09-07-2012 at 01:00: Red Bull Drivers Hit the Hill

The Red Bull Racing Formula One team’s drivers, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel have driven some new Infiniti models for the first time at the famed Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Webber took the all new EMERG-E range-extender hybrid sports car out for the first time. The EMERG-E Concept was launched at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year and the Festival of Speed marked the global debut of the working prototype.

Twin electric motors generate 402bhp (300kW) and Webber wowed the Goodwood crowds with a vehicle capable of 0-60mph sprints in just four seconds and a top speed of 208kph.

Under full electric power, Infiniti EMERG-E operates as a zero emission vehicle for a 30-mile range and when the Lotus-engineered 1.2L three cylinder range-extender petrol engine kicks in to recharge the batteries, it produces a CO2 output of only 55g/km over a 480 kilometre range.

“I’m used to Formula One cars that make a lot of noise, so to drive a silent car was very new to me,” commented Mark Webber after his drive.

“Infiniti have made something really nice here. The EMERG-E looks beautiful and is very quick – faster than you expect with it being so quiet. It was great fun being able to drive it up the hill. Cars like this have to be the future – fast, fun and clean.”

Webber’s team-mate Formula One World Champion Sebastian Vettel drove the car he helped shape, the Infiniti FX Vettel Edition, for the first time at the Festival of Speed.

The Infiniti Global Brand Ambassador had a hand in the car’s design and development from the earliest stages of a clay model right through to the concept that was debuted earlier this year.

Lighter and more aerodynamic, with 30 per cent greater downforce, the 309kW FX Vettel Edition remains true to the Frankfurt Motor Show concept and is Infiniti’s most powerful car.

It’s now in showrooms in a strictly limited edition of 150 cars for Western Europe, Russia and the Middle East, with deliveries beginning in the first quarter of 2013.

“This is the first road car I have helped develop”, said Vettel.

“The Infiniti handles really well and the power is good. It’s big enough to fit my mountain bike in, but the performance is really good and driving it up the Goodwood hill was great fun. It is fantastic for me to have contributed to the design of this car and I’m very excited to take delivery of my own.”
