09-07-2012 at 01:00: Ambrose Fast But Unlucky at Daytona

Marcos Ambrose was an unfortunate victim of a late race incident in the Coke Zero 400 at the Daytona International Speedway this weekend, after the DEWALT Ford Fusion driver was a front runner in the gruelling event.

Subsequent to setting the second quickest time in opening practice, Ambrose was a top-ten contender throughout qualifying and the race.

Ambrose’s challenge however came unstuck within sight of the finish, with his car taken out in a multi-car accident on the high banked superspeedway. Ambrose was eventually classified in 30th.

Emerging unhurt from the wreck, Ambrose was left to rue what could have been.

“It’s one of those deals at Daytona, just in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Ambrose said.

“We had a very quick DEWALT Ford Fusion here, even though for most of the race we were conserving the car.

“It’s a shame, our restrictor plate program has been really strong this year, the Richard Petty Motorsports cars are fast, but we don’t have the results to show for it.

“We’ll bounce back from this at Loudon.”

After being set down to start in ninth position, Ambrose took in the green flag from 38th place following repairs to his window net post-qualifying. Undeterred, Ambrose smartly moved through the pack to be 17th after nine laps and into the top-ten not long after.

The first segment of the race concluded at the 42 lap mark, with Ambrose heading in for a green flag service from fifth position.

By lap 60 Ambrose found himself in 12th, with the field slowing for the first time on lap 81 when Sam Hornish Jnr spun. Pitting under the caution, Ambrose saw in the green flag from 12th position, with the car developing a severe vibration on the restart.

A reprieve came on lap 91 when Bobby Labonte and Kurt Bush were involved in an incident, with Ambrose returning to the pits for a new set of tyres.

From the restart, the issue disappeared, with Ambrose moving swiftly back into a race-high fourth position, before a caution flashed on for a multiple vehicle incident at turn four.

Ambrose took on two tyres in the ensuing pit service, which set up a final 30 lap sprint to the chequered flag.

After initially dropping down the order following the restart, Ambrose started to work his way back up the score board, with a Brad Keselowski spin bringing another yellow.

With only eight laps to go, Ambrose was in position to make a late race charge, but was unfortunately caught out in the “big one”.

Diving low onto the grass verge at turn one to avoid a mess of cars, the DEWALT Ford Fusion made a hard right hand turn before making heavy contact with the outside wall. The car was out of the race on the spot.

At the finish, Tony Stewart proved victorious over Jeff Burton and Matt Kenseth.

Next week the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads to the one mile long New Hampshire Motor Speedway for a 301 mile long race.
