24-06-2012 at 23:00: i20 – Refreshed and Enhanced

The award-winning Hyundai i20 has received a refreshed new look and specification update, offering an even more energetic and affordable package. Sporting a new-look exterior, new six-speed manual transmission and now, standard across the range, Hyundai’s Vehicle Stability Management.

Designed at the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Centre in Rüsselsheim, Germany, the new i20 has adopted the family DNA with the introduction of the signature hexagonal grille. Flowing body lines are reflected in the redesigned front end with a new sculpted bonnet and complimentary front quarter panels. The side repeater lamps are now integrated in the external mirrors.

The rear of the new i20 looks sharp and stylish, continuing the natural flow of design with the introduction of a new rear bumper design and taillights, while updated wheel designs complete the modern new look.

The interior has been significantly enhanced as well. New seat trim is matched by a new centre fascia design with piano black inserts. A trip computer and one-touch triple turn indicators are now standard.

Adding to the new i20′s value equation is a new six-speed manual transmission offering improved performance and efficiency to the range, and Hyundai’s Vehicle Stability Management System (VSM) which provides an added safety feature as standard across the range.

“The new i20 is an attractive entry point to Hyundai’s latest generation range,” said Oliver Mann, Director of Marketing Hyundai Motor Company Australia.

“With revised Euro-styling both inside and out, and high levels of safety and specification, the new i20 will appeal to customers who want value for money without compromising on quality.”

The new i20′s spacious interior is a direct result of Hyundai applying its expertise in design to produce a cabin which ensures passenger comfort with maximised storage space. The front cabin takes on a renewed modernity with the introduction of an all-new centre fascia treatment, featuring stylish piano black inserts.

Further additions to the driver zone include a trip computer with distance to empty, instant and average L/100km, elapsed time and trip odometer, which is now standard across the range, and the added practicality of a one-touch triple turn indicator.

To complement the refined interior of the new i20, new seat trim patterns featuring stylish woven cloth complete the cabin refresh.

The integrated in-dash audio and communications package includes Bluetooth™ telephone and media streaming, CD player, MP3, WMA and AM/FM tuner. The auxiliary audio and USB inputs allow full iPod® connectivity and connection to other external audio sources.

The new i20′s thrifty four-cylinder 1.4-litre Gamma petrol engine features high pressure cast aluminium cylinder block with ladder frame design for improved stiffness and durability. 16-valve twin overhead camshafts deliver peak power and torque outputs of 73.5 kW @ 5500 rpm and 136 Nm @ 4200 rpm.

Improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions are delivered with a combined fuel consumption figure of 5.3-litres per 100 km for the 1.4-litre petrol six-speed manual model with a CO2 emission rating of 126 (combined g/km)*.

On road performance is now further enhanced with the addition of a new proprietary six-speed manual transmission to the range, which will sit beside the optional four-speed automatic transmission, and replaces the outgoing five-speed manual. The six-speed manual transmission offers positive shift feel and further optimises powertrain and shifting performance to ensure precise and easy gearshifts when on the move.

The new i20 delivers the highest levels of advanced active and passive safety technologies to ensure maximum protection for occupants, achieving a 5-star ANCAP safety rating across the range.

Active safety is augmented with the use of Hyundai’s innovative Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system, which integrates the Motor Driven Power System (MDPS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and the Traction Control System (TCS) to provide enhanced directional stability.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist System (BAS) are also standard across the new i20 range

The new i20 also incorporates high levels of passive safety with six airbags – driver and front passenger, driver & front passenger side (thorax) and full length side curtains. Hyundai Active Locking Operation (HALO), which incorporates central door locking, engine immobiliser and keyless entry with alarm, is also standard on all models.

The extensive use of Ultra High Tensile Steel (UHTSS) in key structural locations, combined with targeted enhanced structure connection and reinforcement further improves crashworthiness, and ensures stiffer, safer vehicle integrity.

i20′s suspension has been tuned for Australia’s unique road conditions, extensive tuning and specific calibration of the new i20′s suspension system was undertaken in Australia over thousands of kilometres and numerous road conditions, to ensure the vehicle delivers optimum performance for our unique road surfaces.

It offers sharp response, accurate handling and a comfortable ride on a variety of road conditions. McPherson strut front suspension with coil springs is combined with a coupled torsion beam axle at the rear for precise manoeuvrability and ride comfort.

Speed sensitive Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) is used on new i20, utilising an electric motor to enable varying degrees of power assist for varied conditions. MDPS not only minimises weight and fuel consumption, but also integrates with the Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system.

The updated i20 range is available in two trim levels, Active and Elite. The Elite models add 15″ alloy wheels (14″ steel on Active models), front fog lamps, steering wheel audio remote controls, two additional speakers, leather wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, front passenger seat bag hook and luggage net.

The 1.4-litre Gamma petrol engine can be mated to either a six-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.
