12-06-2012 at 10:00: Audi A6 Avant Arrives

Audi’s new A6 Avant has arrived in Australia and offers two different four-cylinder engines. Both engine variants are direct-injection and turbocharged with the model price starting at $81,800.

A sleek design, lightweight construction and a generous level of standard equipment and convenience features makes the A6 Avant an attractive lifestyle choice.

The new Audi A6 Avant sets standards with its low weight as the aluminium components comprise roughly 20 per cent of the body. Audi is the global pioneer in lightweight construction and has raised the bar once again.

Gross weight has been reduced by as much as 70 kilograms compared with the previous model with the A6 Avant 2.0 TFSI has a kerb weight of just 1,630 kilograms.

The two new engines for the A6 Avant include petrol and a TDI unit. These generate outputs of 132kW and 130kW respectively.

Both of these power units combine power with pioneering efficiency as the fuel consumption has decreased by as much as 21 per cent. The 2.0 TDI can manage 5.1 litres of fuel per 100 km on an average. Both units employ the technologies from Audi’s modular efficiency platform, including a start-stop system. Mated to both engines is the continuously variable multitronic transmission.

The boot space of the new A6 Avant has a capacity of 565 litres, which can be increased to 1,680 litres by folding down the rear seats. Audi also offers a wide range of other practical and refined features as standard which is something we have all come to know from Audi. They include the sensor-controlled, automatically opening tailgate. To operate this system you need to move your foot underneath the rear bumper while standing behind and contactless sensors cause the tailgate to open. This feature is especially convenient when both hands are full of luggage or golf clubs.

A generous standard equipment list includes Audi drive select and MMI Navigation plus. The high-end options include LED headlights, a head-up display, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats with a massage feature and an extensive selection of infotainment elements.

The brand’s high-tech assistance and safety systems lend even more confidence to driving. New for the Audi A6 Avant is the parking system plus with a 360° camera. This features four tiny cameras recording images of the immediate vicinity of the vehicle. The surroundings are displayed on the large on-board monitor in different views. The Park Assist feature will literally manoeuver the car into parallel and perpendicular parking spaces, the driver need only accelerate and brake.

“The new Audi A6 is already an Australian success story,” said Uwe Hagen, Managing Director of Audi Australia.

“It has won numerous awards both here and internationally and offers a 5-star safety rating with a very high level of standard specification. The A6 Avant will add a new dimension to the successful A6 family, offering best-in-class design, efficient engines and the versatility of a large, practical luggage area. It’s the ideal vehicle for active Australian families.”

The Audi A6 Avant will be available from June this year.
