28-05-2012 at 07:00: Three from Three for Evans

In round three of the Bosch Australian Rally Championship (ARC), Eli Evans notched his third win for the official Honda team, confidently taking Sunday’s second heat of the two-wheel drive class after Saturday winner Jack Monkhouse retired with broken rear knuckle on the first stage.

“It was a typical Rally Queensland – drama packed,” Evans said.

“We had a bad start and were down by eight minutes after the second stage due to a flat tyre. We went to change it and the car fell off the jack twice so we lost a lot of valuable time.

“It was unfortunate for Jack Monkhouse today (Sunday) but Queensland is a tough event and you have to have the right machinery to get you to the end.”

Victory in the four-wheel drive class went to New South Wales brother and sister pair Michael Boaden and Helen Cheers driving a Mitsubishi EVO.

Boaden totally dominated the Bosch four wheel drive class in the second leg of the rally to score his maiden win in a round of the Bosch ARC.

Finishing nearly four minutes ahead of Tom Wilde, Boaden has taken the championship lead by two points heading to round four in South Australia.

“You can’t get much better than this,” said Boaden.

“We’ve won heats before but never  won a round outright and it’s an awesome feeling to finally have one in the bag – especially to after lead the entire rally rather than clinching it on the final stage.

“The last stage was very nerve wracking; I actually eased off a little bit to make sure I got to the end.”

Four-time national rally champions Neal Bates and Coral Taylor (Toyota Celica RA40) dominated the Australian Classic Rally Challenge as they won 17 of 18 stages over the two days to defeat Cathy Donohue and Michael Barrett (BMW M3 E30).

Australian Classic Rally Challenge series leaders Jeff David and Grant Geelan (Porsche 911) were fifth and the only other team to score a stage victory.

Bates spun on stage 13 without damage when he confused the cornering technique in his classic Celica for the modern S2000 Corolla he previously drove.

“I pulled on the handbrake and depressed the clutch as I was supposed to and spun and stalled,” Bates said.

Coral Taylor really enjoyed her rally weekend as when the Saturday stages were over she posted on Facebook that Saturday was the most fun she has had in rallying in the past 30 years.

Bates and Taylor have now stormed back into contention for the Australian Classic Rally Challenge title, closely trailing David and Geelan.

Queenslander Steve MacKenzie won the Rallyschool Australian Junior Rally Challenge in his Ford Fiesta taking the Kumho Future Champions award for his efforts and qualifying for the final of the Challenge in Coffs Harbour in October.

V8 Supercar driver Tim Slade made a stellar debut in the Australian Side-by-Side Rally Challenge, taking a Polaris to equal first place with Can-Am driver Michael Guest.
