23-04-2012 at 08:00: Suzuki’s Strong Focus in Asia-Pacific

Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) has continued its investments in the Asia-Pacific region with cars rolling off the line from a new Thailand plant, construction beginning on a second plant in China and planning expansion of its Indonesian operation.

The new Thai plant has started production of Swift after satisfying the Thai government’s strict eco-car project guidelines.

The eco-car project is a project promoted by the Thai government, aimed to increase the production of environmentally friendly compact passenger vehicles.

Suzuki received its approval for eco-car production by the Thai government in December 2007. After the ground-breaking ceremony in November 2009, it started its production of the new Swift at the plant in March, this year.

Located in Rayong Province, the Thai plant already employs nearly 500 people. It currently only produces Swift for local consumption, but has capacity to expand and provide another export hub.

Suzuki’s joint venture in China has started work on construction of its second manufacturing plant.

Suzuki has a long history in China, establishing Changan Suzuki with Changan Automobile Co., Ltd. in 1993. The joint venture has been producing and distributing numerous vehicles for nearly 20 years, including the Cultus, Swift, and SX4.

Changan Suzuki’s current plant in Banan District, Chongqing has an annual production capacity of 250,000 units.

The addition of the second plant will double annual capacity to 500,000 units, and meet the growing demand for Suzuki products in China.

Construction will be finished in the third quarter of 2013, with production scheduled to begin in December of that year.

Suzuki has purchased another 1.3 million square metre site to expand its manufacturing base in Indonesia.

Suzuki currently has two plants in Indonesia with an annual production capacity of one million motorcycles and 80,000 automobiles for the domestic market, including SX4 and APV.
