23-04-2012 at 08:00: Supercars Returns to Eastern Creek

Australia’s largest city will host a traditional circuit racing event at the newly refurbished Eastern Creek International Raceway August 24-26 as well as the blockbuster street race, the Sydney Telstra 500, in December.

With the second Sydney round joining V8 Supercars’ calendar, regional Victoria’s Winton Raceway event will move from August to November 16-18.

“We believe Australia’s largest city can have motorsport nirvana with a thrilling circuit race at a great permanent venue followed by all the street circuit bells and whistles of the Sydney Telstra 500,” V8 Supercar CEO David Malone said.

“We compete three times in Victoria and three times in Queensland each year so our view is we can sustain three New South Wales events, certainly for this year,  based on their different market appeal, location, timing and format.”

Mr Malone pointed out that the Coates Hire Ipswich 300 from south-east Queensland is followed just two months later by the massive Armor All Gold Coast 600 on the streets of Surfers Paradise. Although the two venues are just an hour’s drive apart they are very different styles of event and both extremely successful.

After an absence of three years V8 Supercars returned to Eastern Creek last year for a pre-season Test Day which was welcomed by the people of Western Sydney with thousands of fans attending. The venue has since undergone an $11 million refurbishment.

NSW Minister for Tourism and Major Events George Souris said he was delighted to be able to announce yet another sporting event to add to the 2012 NSW Events Calendar.

“We are incredibly pleased that V8 Supercars Australia chose Western Sydney to host this race and a broader festival of ‘all things V8′.

“Encouraging event organisers to stage their events in Sydney and NSW is all part of the NSW Government’s determination to gain and keep the title of the nation’s no.1 tourism and events city.

“Through Destination NSW and the Homebush Motor Racing Authority we have been able to work with V8 Supercars Australia and the Australian Racing Drivers Club (ARDC) to make this happen and make even better use of the newly rebuilt Eastern Creek Raceway.

“The event is being promoted by the ARDC and at no cost to the NSW tax payer,” Mr Souris said.

Glenn Matthews, CEO of the ARDC, managers of Eastern Creek International Raceway, said that since the venue’s refurbishment Sydney’s motorsport fans had been loud and constant in their call for V8 Supercars to return.

“Eastern Creek is the only permanent race circuit in Sydney and is a perfect complement to the street circuit event held at Olympic Park in December,” Matthews said.

“Having the V8 boys back is ideal to re-launch the new Eastern Creek, with a refurbished pit lane and upgraded spectator facilities almost complete, combined with September marking the 60th Anniversary of the ARDC. Over the coming months we will also be making further important announcements regarding Eastern Creek that I am sure will be well received.”

Mr Malone added V8 Supercars continued to work to introduce a new international round and that discussions were ongoing with several potential venues. Unfortunately there was insufficient time for the envisaged 2012 event to be ready for the November date.

Round nine of the Supercars from Eastern Creek will also be the official commencement of a week-long celebration of “all things V8” with the return of the Muscle Car Masters the following (Fathers’ Day) weekend.

There will be something for all motorsport fans that week with V8 Supercars featuring the best of the current crop of cars and drivers and The Masters presenting a great celebration of the cars and legends from the glory years of Bathurst.

Tickets for round nine of the V8 Supercars at Eastern Creek International Raceway are expected to go on sale next month.
