13-04-2012 at 07:00: New Swedish Touring Car Series

Outside of the V8Supercar Championship that travels all over Australia and parts of the world are some exciting new touring car series.

The Scandinavians are known all over the world for their rally driving abilities but the wave of renewal sweeping the touring car world has reached Scandinavia, with the Swedes set to launch an all-new touring car championship called the TTA Racing Elite League.

Sharing some conceptual similarities to the 2012-spec DTM machines in Germany and New Zealand’s just-launched V8 SuperTourers, the wild-looking TTA cars will also share their tyre supplier.

All eight rounds of the new Swedish championship, which debuts at Karlskoga Motorstadion on May 12, will see every car run on a control tyre supplied by Hankook Tire’s.

The TTA championship is for purpose-built space-frame race cars, built with more than just an allan key, powered by a common 320 kilowatt, 3.5 litre V6 engine and a Formula One-style KERS hybrid system.

Carbon fibre bodies in the shapes of different model sedans are fitted to the common chassis, giving a variety of car manufacturers the opportunity to compete on a level playing field.

BMW, Citroen and Volvo have all announced their support for the new series.

TTA representative and driver for the Flash Engineering team, Jan “Flash” Nilsson, said the championship was proud to start the partnership with Hankook.

“Hankook has provided us with an amazing race tyre that has demonstrated impressive performance during both our test sessions and in various other racing series,” said Nilsson.

“The durability of the tyres will allow our drivers to push hard even in the long distance races and their high levels of grip will open up more overtaking opportunities.”

The 18-inch tyres are the same as those used in the German-based DTM touring car championship last year.

Hankook began exclusive tyre supply to DTM in 2011 and the New Zealand V8 SuperTourers championship last month.

Hankook will also supply the Italian-based Superstars International Series and GTSprint International Series, both of which commence their 2012 seasons on April 1 at Monza.

“With our TTA partnership Hankook is taking another significant step in our growing motorsport engagements, becoming for the first time a supplier to a motor racing series in the Scandinavian markets,” said the vice president of marketing and sales for Hankook in Europe, Hee-Se Ahn.
