06-03-2012 at 08:00: Queensland Hillclimb Season Underway

The 2012 season got under way last week for the competitors in the Tighe Cams Hillclimb series with action a plenty.

The season began in dry weather with competitors taking to Hillclimb track at Mt Cotton in Queensland on Saturday afternoon. Heading out for their first run of the new series can sometimes be a bit much but the 60 car field never blinked an eye lid as the times were being laid down.

The Improved Production up to 2000cc class saw Danny Mischok lead from the first run. Mischok in the well presented yellow Ford Escort set blistering time of 46.43 seconds on his sixth run to take class honors and a rather impressive sixth outright.

An interesting and fast car to watch on the hill was the Ford Cobra RMC of Mark Crespan. Setting an average time on his first run of the weekend and having a massive spin on his second, he was able to pull himself together and take the class win and fifth outright. 45.65 seconds was the time he set in his second to last run and could not be beaten despite the best efforts of Dave Roberts in the MG B GT.

The superkarts class was full of excitement as three drivers battled it out for the class win. The speed was high and the karts were low but this did not stop Warren Rob from pushing hard. All of his runs proved to be close to his class winning time of 45.14 seconds bar his third run of the weekend. Pushing a little too hard out of the lower hairpin, Rob made an error which left him off track and in a spin. This didn’t stop the determined driver from taking forth outright for the day.

A surprisingly quick Torana driven by David Malone finished the weekend on the podium with a time of 44.37 seconds. Malone set the pace for other competitors on his sixth run and never looked back.

The Formula Libra class is where most of the fastest track action happens in Hillclimbs, and this was the case for round one. The battle played out across two days and 10 runs on the hill between Jim Milliner in his OMS 2000M and Paul Van Wijk in the ever quick BK Z07. The times were close and the action hot but Van Wijk (42.05 seconds) took outright honors by only 1.7 seconds from Milliner (43.75 seconds).

It wasn’t all clear sailing for drivers as there were a few thrills and spills. Graham Arnold missed his first official run but decided he was ready by run number two. Unfortunately for Arnold this was his first and only run in round one. Due to rear suspension failure, Arnold shot off the track coming into the hairpin and landed in the macadamia nut shells.

Also starting 2012 off with a bag was young Mitchell Allwood who on his third run of the day lost brake pedal pressure in his Ford Falcon 4-litre turbo and went off the end of the track. As he left the road the car bottomed out and destroyed an auto cooler near the front. Allwood was still able to celebrate as he set the fastest time in class for the weekend on his second pass giving him the class victory and 19th outright.

Round two the Tighe Cams Hillclimb Series will be at Mt Cotton on April 28 and 29.
