25-02-2012 at 18:00: Tragedy in Season Opener

During the opening round of the 2012 World Superbike Championship at Phillip Island today, tragedy struck in the first few laps of the Australian National Supersport class for young gun Oscar McIntyre.

The combined Supersport and Superstock 600 categories was only a few laps in when a huge crash unfolded involving three riders, Mackay Kawasaki’s Luke Burgess, Oscar McIntyre (Yamaha) and New South Wales rider Michael Lockart.

It is believed that McIntyre lost control of his R6 at the fast first corner, known as Doohan Corner, and ended up in the path of Burgess and Lockart who were unable to avoid hitting the young rider.

Unfortunately 17-year-old McIntyre has succumbed to the injuries sustained in the crash with both Burgess and Lockart receiving treatment in the circuit’s medical centre.

Burgess has now been released while Lockart is still being treated for non life-threatening injuries.

With this incedent it has forced promoters to cancel today’s World Superbike Superpole session with grid positions to be decided on earlier qualifying sessions.

Condolences to all those close to young Oscar and his family.
