07-02-2012 at 08:00: Fiat’s Bambino Grows Up

Fiat’s popular 500 will gain a big brother at the Geneva International Motor Show when Fiat takes the wraps off the 500L, a new five door multi-purpose version of the Italian car maker’s stylish ‘bambino’.

The Fiat 500L, the L of course standing for ‘Large’, which, following the Abarth and Cabrio versions, furthers Fiat’s strategy of extending its product offer by introducing models in different positions within existing market sectors to more fully satisfy different types of customers.

The Fiat 500L, which replaces the Fiat Idea in the car maker’s European range, enters the European compact or micro people mover/MPV market sector.

With the 500L, Fiat aims to combine the passenger space of a micro people mover/MPV with the feel of a small SUV on the road and the restrained dimensions and efficiency of a small segment car, and thus the new Fiat model defies the conventional distinctions between the various segments, combining the typical characteristics of different categories in order to create a distinctive alternative to the traditional car segments.

With the 500L, the Fiat brand demonstrates its creative spirit once more: a marriage of functionality and emotion, it features a five-seater single-volume structure which is 414 cm long, 178 cm wide and 166 cm high. Historically, the 500L is a further development of the concept of ‘cab forward’ introduced by Fiat with the 600 Multipla, a precursor to the concept of the compact people carrier and the Fiat Idea which, along with the Lanica Musa, arguably introduced the idea of compact or micro people mover.

Produced at the Fiat factory in Kragujevac, Serbia, 500L is a ‘first car’ for those who won’t settle for anything less than Italian style, the versatility that comes from a functional design and engine technology that sets the bar in terms of efficiency.

The Fiat 500L will be introduced to Europe in the last quarter of 2012, with an engine range which will initially comprise two petrol engines, TwinAir and 1.4-litre, and a 1.3 MultiJet II turbo diesel engine and the most advanced, state-of-the-art technology from Fiat Group Automobiles. A decision on the launch of the Fiat 500L for the Australian market has yet to be made.
