18-11-2011 at 08:00: Volvo Cars Goes Big with New Partnership

In celebration of its exciting new partnership with the HSBC Waratahs rugby union club, Volvo Car Australia has displayed an explosive image on the first floor of its North Ryde headquarters.

The one-way vision stretches 12m wide by 4m high and shows a graphic of NSW star players Dave Dennis (lock), Berrick Barnes (fly half), Rob Horne (centre) and Tatafu Polota-Nau (hooker) jumping out of the building (complete with glass fragments flying out with them).

The mural, easily seen by passersby on busy Epping Rd, is completed at the top by: “Volvo Cars. Proud partner of the Waratahs”. The window wrap will be on display until after the opening round of the 2012 FxPro Super Rugby season, when NSW host current Super Rugby champions the Queensland Reds on Saturday February 25.

Volvo Cars is the new sleeve sponsors of the Waratahs and is also now an official partner of the NSW Rugby Union.

“This dynamic partnership further strengthens our position in Super Rugby, extending our existing sponsorships with the Queensland Reds and the Western Force,” says Matt Braid, Managing Director, Volvo Car Australia.

“The Waratahs are committed to becoming the number one centre of Super Rugby excellence and this alignment is shared by Volvo Cars’ leadership vision in the global luxury automotive industry.”

Volvo Cars’ core values of safety, innovation and sustainability are also echoed by the Waratahs, who exemplify leadership, innovation, strength and performance.

Said Waratahs Rugby CEO Jason Allen: “We are thrilled to have such an innovative and compelling partner join our team. Volvo has a reputation as a luxury brand a leader in safety and innovation and we believe the two brands will make a powerful team.

“With our new Head Coach Michael Foley at the helm and key acquisitions like Rocky Elsom, Adam Ashley-Cooper, Dan Vickerman and Sarel Pretorius, we believe the team is capable of the kind of performances that will have fans and families alike coming back for more.

”When you add in the fantastic support of Volvo Cars, a blockbuster home draw and a return to the great tradition of afternoon footy, we’re in for an exciting and competitive season,” Mr Allen said.

Next season’s draw is very exciting for the Waratahs, with all the big names of southern hemisphere rugby coming to NSW including the Crusaders, Hurricanes, Sharks and Bulls. The action kicks off on Saturday February 25 with the first of four local derbies, a blockbuster opener against current Super Rugby champions the Queensland Reds. As well as the start of the 2012 season, the match also celebrates the 130th anniversary of the NSW v Queensland rivalry.

Volvo Cars will be working with the Waratahs to celebrate Super Rugby through an active schedule of pre-game activity on the field at the start of each home match, precinct activity before each home match and naming rights to every try scored at both the team’s home venues, the Sydney Football Stadium and ANZ Stadium. Players have recently been seen driving around in Volvo cars, as part of the Scandinavian luxury brand’s partnership with the FxPro Super Rugby club.

Volvo Cars ambassador Matt Shirvington already shares a relationship with the HSBC Waratahs. The Olympic sprinter is in his second year as speed coach working to develop speed and agility across the squad.
