12-11-2011 at 17:00: Sprintcar Fraternity Unite For “Magic Man 34” Event

This weekend’s sprintcar clash is one the sprintcar fraternity hold very close to their hearts. This Saturday night will mark the fifth annual Magic Man 34 tribute for the late Michael Figliomeni.

Figliomeni was a four-time Australian Speedcar champion, 2003-04 AHG Sprintcar Series Champion and had also taken out the prestigious Krikke Boys Shootout on two occasions.

Figliomeni sadly passed away on October 28, 2006 after suffering a fatal heart attack at the Perth Motorplex. Earlier that night he had won the previous two heats and it was shaping up to be a great opening feature race.

“Michael was a very humble person and lived for his family and the sport he loved,” said brother Stephen Figliomeni.

“Other than family and work, this race is the most important thing in my life. It’s important to keep his name alive.”

Perth Motorplex Speedway manager Gavin Migro has been supporting the event for the last five years and knew Michael personally.

“Michael was a very good friend of mine and an amazing talent in everything he put his mind to, whether it was driving or constructing his own racing cars,” said Migro.

Now in its fifth year the race will see drivers battle it out for the prestigious title in the main feature race, which will be run in 34 laps in honour of Figliomeni who raced with the number 34.

An important event on each of the driver’s calendar, each will be looking to take out the main feature race and increase their point score for the AHG Sprintcar Series.

Mark Wells will be one to watch, currently in the lead of the AHG Sprintcar Series by 11 points, taking first place at the Grand Opening Showdown and coming second at last weekend’s clash at Collie.

Kerry Madsen returns to Perth after competing in the prestigious World of Outlaws Series in the US. The New South Wales professional Sprintcar driver placed third at the opening showdown at Perth Motorplex on October 22nd and will be looking for a top spot again.

Defending AHG Sprintcar Series champion Jamie Maiolo is currently in second place in the rankings and will be keen to add to his point score.
