10-11-2011 at 09:00: Six Time Champ Claims Collie Victory

The heavy rain threatened to cancel the second AHG Sprintcar Series meet at Collie on Saturday evening, but miraculously the clouds parted on cue to reveal one of the most exciting West Australian Sprintcar meets in recent history.

There was adrenaline pumping action from the beginning, with New South Wales based driver Garry Brazier generating excitement at the track by whipping the Collie Speedway lap record in an amazing 13.92 second lap in the time trial.

Close heat wins from David Priolo, Ken Sartori, and Sheldon Brady followed. Sartori, who currently holds the Southern Thunder Sprintcar Series crown, impressed the crowds by taking out both of his heats and securing a well-deserved position in the A Dash.

But it was Priolo’s heat win in particular which surprised the critics, given his 360 powered car was 50 cubic inches short in the engine room.

In a movie script ending it was the closing Feature Race which provided the most entertainment. Priolo continued his dream run by leading the field for twenty laps, before losing control of his car and sliding sideways to intercept J&S Drilling driver Ben Ellement.

Ironically, the delay from the crash brought on the rain, calling for all cars to be halted to wait for the rain to stop. With rain increasing to a heavy downpour the race was called off, and the deciding result was determined from the initial race stoppage which sent Priolo and Ellement to the rear of the field for causing the re-start.

Priolo was disappointed in the result, especially given his impressive opening heat results.

“I was really pushing for the front and there was moisture on the ground, the rain was just about to set it. It’s hard to end like that when I had been dominant pretty much the whole time,” said Priolo.

By default it was the six time National Champion Garry Brazier who took out the evening’s victory. Brazier was given the call up last week by Geoff Kendrick and replaced driver Kerry Madsen for the night, and there was much anticipation around his appearance.

“There were still ten laps remaining when Priolo spun out, so anything could have happened in that time. With the rain calling the race off, I was really happy to take the victory for Kendrick’s team,” said Brazier, who credited his win to the confidence he gained from the record lap time at the beginning of the evening.

“I was really grateful for the opportunity to race in Western Australia. I would really like to thank Geoff Kendrick and his team, as well as their principle sponsors 92.9, Kenerick Group, Melville Holden and Earthex,” Brazier went on to say.

“Geraldton Jet” Mark Wells, who had taken out the Season Opener at Perth Motorplex a fortnight earlier, finished in second place on the podium followed closely by Flex Motorsport team member Sheldon Brady in third position. It was Brady’s first experience on the podium in professional Sprintcar racing, an achievement he was extremely proud of.

“Gary Brazier and Mark Wells were guys I idolised as a kid. I watched them in the sport from around the age of 8 years, so it was such a thrill to be standing alongside them on the podium,” said an elated Brady.

The second round of the Southern Thunder Sprintcar Series will be held on the 19th of November at the Bunbury Speedway.
