22-11-2011 at 08:00: Marmont Makes History with Victory

Jay Marmont and the CDR Rockstar Yamaha team capped off an extraordinary year by winning the final round of the 2011 Monster Energy Super X and in the process sealed victory in the championship, the first Australian based racer to win the championship since its inception in 2008.

On board his YZ450F and contesting the premier Pro Open category, Marmont entered the final round in good form and in the championship lead, five points ahead of his nearest rival, Tye Simmonds (JDR Motorex KTM). But Marmont wasn’t going to back this championship in and wanted to put his stamp of authority both on the round and the series in front a big crowd at Ipswich, west of Brisbane.

Marmont won the 20 lap main event in convincing fashion after taking the lead on the first lap and setting sail for the finish line. He gained a comfortable margin over the rest of the pack and relentlessly ticked off lap after lap with lapped riders the only thing hindering his progress.

The round and championship victory was a huge effort by Marmont and his team considering that after the opening round, Jay sat in eighth place and over ten points behind. But, the ever determined 28 year old from Wollongong set about clawing back the points and barnstormed home in the final for rounds with 3-1-2-1 results.

“I was really determined to finish on a strong note and show that I deserved this championship,” Marmont said after the victory.

“I felt good in practice and the bike was perfect so it was up to me to keep my mind on the job and peel off the best racing laps I could.”

“The CDR Rockstar Yamaha team must also take plenty of credit as they continually do a great job and never leave anything unturned in their preparation. We had the right tyres, the best bike set up and it was a real team effort from everyone, so I can’t thank them enough.”

The Super X Championship is Marmont second national Pro Open championship in 2011 as in August he wrapped up the MX Nationals for the fourth time in succession and capped off a dominant year for the CDR Rockstar Team as well as Marmont.

Team owner Craig Dack was also a happy man at racings’ end as he led his team to another 2011 victory.

“With the opening round results not being so flash, I knew we had it all in front of us but I never doubted that we couldn’t do it. I had complete faith in the staff at CDR to build the best bike and Jay’s determination and fight is unquestioned so it was a very satisfying victory for all of us.”

“This now completes our race commitments for the year and I would like to take this time to thank everyone at Yamaha, our team sponsors and staff for an amazing year. This is our first national supercross championship since 2005 and to come on the back of a 1-2 finish in the MX Nationals is a fantastic result,” Dack concludes.
