16-11-2011 at 08:00: Madsen Takes Out Magic Man 34 Tribute Race

There was no sign of jet lag from Kerry Madsen who took out the Magic Man 34 tribute race on Saturday night at the Perth Motorplex, having landed in the country less than 24 hours earlier.

Madsen arrived back from the prestigious World of Outlaws finals in America on Friday afternoon and was on the track driving for the Kendrick Racing Team by the next day.

Having finished fifth in America, Madsen wasn’t going to let this win get away from him and was dominant for the majority of the race.

“We put together a new car for tonight and I’m glad I have brought one home for the guys,” said Madsen.

Current AHG Sprintcar Series leader Jamie Maiolo did well to finish in second place, having started in fourth.

“It’s good to be here on the podium for the Figliomeni race. Kerry did a really great job tonight,” said Maiolo after the feature race.

Despite several re-starts Madsen managed to remain in the top 3 for the length of the feature race. The only driver to take his top spot for a few laps was Shaun Bradford.

But Bradford quickly lost his pace and by the eighth lap he rolled into the infield, ending his night.

Third place winner, David Priolo seemed to have the hardest job on the night, riding with a smaller engine than the rest of the drivers and putting in a remarkable effort to finish on the podium.

“We had to make up for that a little bit. We are in a 360 motor against these 410’s,” said Priolo.

Priolo also tributed his finish on the podium to Michael Figliomeni, who died of a heart attack at the Perth Motorplex in 2006. Figliomeni was a four-time Australian Speedcar Champion, the 2003-04 AHG Sprintcar Series Champion and had also taken out the prestigious Krikke Boys Shootout on two occasions.

“Michael was someone I looked up to when I was growing up, he was just one hell of a racer,” said Priolo of the late sprintcar champion, whom the Magic Man 34 tribute race is in honour of.

In another eventful incident, young gun Callum Williamson took a hard tumble in lap 26 but amazingly sustained no injuries and his car remained relatively untouched.

The AHG Sprintcar Series continues this weekend, with the second round of the Southern Thunder Series taking place at Bunbury.
