30-11-2011 at 08:00: A Shaw Thing

Race driving instructor Mike Navybox described one of his pupils, Michael Shaw, as one of the best he has seen following the recent final round of the 2011 NSW Motor Race Championship at Wakefield Park.

So dominant has the 2011 season been for the 22 year old ‘hobby racer’ from Arcadia in Sydney’s north that he came to the tight and technical Goulburn circuit for the grand finale having already won the 2011 Radical Clubman Cup and 2011 Independant Race Series Le Mans Sports category in his ‘Rent-A-Space’ Radical SR3.

As if winning the Clubman Cup and IRS Series were not enough, Shaw finished the season with another solid performance at Wakefield Park to also wrap up the 2011 NSW State Championships SuperSports Category.

What will send a shiver up the spine of other Radical drivers, is confirmation from the youngsters father and team manager Phil Shaw, that Michael is almost certain of moving up to the Radical Australia Cup next year.

“Yes we have been looking around, and there’s not that much out there that matches the Radical, so yes, we are 95% sure of running in the Radical Australia Cup in 2012,” Phil Shaw said.

“Mike realises while he’s done well this year, it’s still only club or club level racing so he’s not getting carried away.

Shaw has been running with the Navybox School of Motorsport team since he started in the sport driving a West in 2010, and then moved up to the Radical this year.

His success in 2012 has come as no real surprise to Navybox, who is full of praise for the youngster.

“From day one you could see Mike had what it takes to succeed. He is a fantastic driver, with hand eye co-ordination second to none, and with that he is also an unassuming, well-mannered and courteous gentleman who has been an absolute privilege to work with.

“Mike has no ambitions to go to Formula One or anything like that, but in reality is too old for F1 anyway.

“He is a hobby racer. It is something he loves, but if he was chasing a career in the sport, he would have no problems handling V8 Supercars or Carrera Cup confidently,” Navybox said.
