19-10-2011 at 08:00: Yamaha Reveal SuperX Line Up

Yamaha will unleash their strongest line up to date at the opening round of the 2011 Monster Energy Super X Championship when the series hits the Melbourne Knights Stadium on October 22.

All three of Yamaha’s factory supported teams will be in action as well as some of the country’s top junior pilots as the blue crew chases a big finish to an already successful 2011 racing season.

Lining up for the CDR Rockstar team, Jay Marmont and team mate Jake Moss form one of the strongest line ups in the Pro Open division. Marmont, the four-time MX National champion and former Australian Supercross Champion, will be out to win the one championship that has eluded him so far in his stellar career.

In previous years, Marmont has been a race winner and championship contender but without any top US Factory stars competing in the entire series, Marmont knows now is his time to shine.

“Without a rider like Reed here, the 2011 championship is more open than ever. I took some time off after the MX Nationals to recharge and I think it has done me the world of good. I feel fresh on the bike and testing has gone really well, so I look forward to kicking off at round one and chasing this championship.”

After an injury interrupted start of the year, Jake Moss is back to 100% and eagerly awaiting the first gate drop at Melbourne. Moss, who has been a race and round winner in SuperX has gelled quickly with the YZ450F and the CDR team has produced a bike exactly to his liking.

“From the first day on the Yamaha, I felt good and the bike was great. We have since done a series of tests and every time we have made big improvements to the bike and now it’s one of the best race bikes I have had.”

Serco Yoshimura Yamaha will enter the 2011 Super X championship with the same rider line up that completed the MX Nationals, with Kirk Gibbs and Luke Styke at the controls. The team has also taken command of the 2012 YZ250F and look forward to racing the vastly improved machine in supercross conditions.

Kirk Gibbs will hit round one under an injury cloud after breaking his collar bone just over four weeks ago. Gibbs has remained off the bike in that time and worked hard on his rehab in an effort to make the start gate at round one in Melbourne.

“I had a small crash at training one day and broke my collar bone. The break was in an awkward spot so they weren’t able to plate it. I have given it plenty of rest and now some manipulation in an attempt to be right for round one. It feels pretty good now, but I won’t really know until I get on a bike and give it a good test,” Gibbs explains.

Styke has been busy in the layoff period working hard on his speed and fitness and hoping to make the most of this opportunity given to him by the Serco team.

“I have let myself down over the past 12 months but I have turned the corner and really put in a huge effort to be as fit and as fast for SuperX. I had a good year in 2009 and now with the preparation I have done and the best bike in the field, I expect to do well this year,” Styke states.

Yamaha will field a two rider team under the GYTR Rockstar Yamaha banner with Luke Arbon competing in the Pro Lites class while Sam Duncanson will contest the newly formed Under 19 category in the absence of team regular, Shaun Redhead, who is out with a knee injury.

The team will also assist Australian Off road star Matt Phillips at selected rounds as he continues to show his versatility on anything with two wheels. Phillips will also compete in the Under 19 class.

“I moved back to South Australia to be more focused on my riding and training,” states Luke Arbon. “I have a practice track in my back yard so I have been able to get plenty of track time and I feel better on the bike that I have in a long time.”

The 14 to 15 years Lites class will be filled with plenty of Yamaha’s from the state based Yamaha Junior Racing program. Damon Hill, Joel Milesevic, Bill Jackson and Joel Dinsdale will all do selected rounds of the championship as they get their feet wet in Super X.

The championship gets under way this Saturday in Melbourne before heading north via Wollongong, Campbelltown, Maitland and Brisbane in consecutive weeks.
