Dusanka Stepanovic of Betie’s Cafe and Sue Holmes of Sue’s Transport Books (both located inside the Southern Antique Centre at Kogarah) were busier than usual recently. They had organised a get-together for former local Sir Jack Brabham and his onetime business partner and car designer Ron Tauranac A.O.
Besides the book signing and meeting old friends, Sir Jack was reunited with his first race car; a speedway midget constructed in 1947 by early Hurstville cycle champion Ronnie Ward. After a very hard but successful life the car came into the loving and skilled hands of Mr Don Halliday, who has restored it back to full health.
The two ladies were assisted by the St George and Sutherland Shire Leader, the Daily Telegraph and Brian Darby’s Vintage Speedway website in enthusiastically promoting the event. They focused on the nearby areas where Sir Jack had been born, educated, apprenticed, lived and had his aviation and Ford dealership businesses. The result was astounding; children and somewhat older persons in the many, many hundreds turned up to shake the hands of two Australians who had changed the face of world Formula 1 motor racing.
A funny thing happened to one of the organisers, as they stood out the front of the Antique centre at 6am one morning with a big sign that read ‘Jack Brabham here Saturday 3.30 p.m.’. One cheeky passer by yelled out ‘I’d come, if it were Jack Daniel’s'!
The photograph supplied was taken by Lisa McMahon for Fairfax Media. It shows Sir Jack and Ron by the midget with Don Halliday (present owner of the car).
