26-10-2011 at 08:00: Wells Wins Sprintcar Grand Opening

A wet start to the night didn’t slow the action down at the season opener of Super Speedway at Perth Motorplex in Kwinana on Saturday night, with Geraldton driver Mark Wells taking out the title.

Wells was a strong contender from the beginning of the race, starting from position four before quickly to moving into second place.

“It’s great to start the season with a win,” said Wells following his successful outing.

Jamie Maiolo, who won the track championship last year, placed second. Maiolo was hot on Wells’ tail for the majority of the race but in lap 11 Wells moved to overtake Maiolo and from there Wells lead the race until the finish line, despite several re-starts.

Maiolo, disappointed with his placing said the track was hard to read due to the wet weather at the beginning of the night.

Finishing in third place was American-based driver Kerry Madsen.

Meanwhile, defending track champion Shaun Bradford failed to place in the feature race with a flat rear tyre putting him out for the night.

“I was going well at the beginning of the night, but I could feel the tyre going down and that was the end of it,” said Bradford.

The only female driver in the race, Rhiannon Burleigh was out by lap 13, crashing into fellow driver Troy Beckingham, fortunately neither driver was injured.

“I’m fine! I had nowhere to go. It’s not the best feeling though, I’ll tell you that much,” said Burleigh.

There were more anxious moments during lap 13, a crash which saw Jason Kendrick and Ken Sartori go head to head.

“Kenny hit the grease and just nailed me,” said driver number 11 Kendrick.

Sartori was quick to douse any ill feelings, jumping out of his car to apologise to Kendrick.

“Not a great way to end. I told him that it was my deal. I guess you just have to take the good with the bad,” said Sartori.

After a slow start to the night with the rain keeping drivers at bay, Perth Motorplex still enjoyed a large turnout of spectators.

Now in its twelfth season, the Sprintcar Entrants Group has paid out close to a million dollars in prize money over that time to drivers.

Throughout the month of February, WA will host the best Sprintcar drivers from Australia in six World Series Sprintcar events, including the Grand Final at Perth Motorplex.

The AHG Sprintcar Series will travel throughout the state of Western Australia, through until the Gold Cup Grand Final in April 2012. The series will reach regional locations such as Collie, Bunbury, Kalgoorlie, Albany, Manjimup, and Northam.
