The Malaysian MotoGP was halted not long after the race began when Honda rider Marco Simoncelli fell and was hit by Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi.
The 24-year-old Simoncelli had his helmet knocked off in the horrible accident, which occurred when the Italian lowsided from his bike at Turn 11 on the Sepang Circuit.
His bike veered across the track and straight into the path of Edwards and Rossi who could do nothing to avoid the collision. The race was immediately red-flagged.
Simoncelli, who was motionless on the track after the impact, had been fourth at the end of lap one.
Edwards also fell but escaped serious injury, while Rossi, on a Ducati, was able to return to the pits.
With all the riders, teams, fans and crowds on the edge of the seat waiting and hoping for good news to come, the pit lane was a very sombre place.
The announcement that no one wanted to hear came from race control and was announced to all the teams. Simoncelli had succumb to his injures and passed away.
The team at Australian Driver Magazine send our thoughts and prayers to the family, friends and team.
