12-10-2011 at 08:00: Lexus Introduces LFA

Lexus LFA marks both a turning point in Lexus’ development and the beginning of a renewed focus for the luxury marque.

Sitting atop Lexus’ F performance vehicle portfolio, which includes IS F and F Sport models, LFA is a tangible example of the template from which all future Lexus models will be developed and evaluated.

This template encompasses sensory traits such as driving feel, response and enjoyment, and engineering ‘MUSTS’ – 500 specific engineering standards that are non-negotiable.

In a radical departure from standard Lexus practice the LFA team approached development from a non-traditional angle.

The result is a lightweight, powerful and balanced car, featuring an advanced Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) construction for its chassis and bodywork to deliver a light, incredibly strong and highly rigid structure.

Sixty-five per cent of LFA’s body structure is carbon fibre, while the remaining 35 per cent is aluminium.

At its heart is a bespoke 4.8-litre V10 engine producing 412kW of power and 480Nm of torque.

It propels the supercar to 100km/h in 3.7 seconds and is capable of revving from idle to a redline of 9,000rpm in just 0.6 seconds.

“From the very beginning of automobile history, supercars have represented dreams, hopes and aspirations,” said Haruhiko Tanahashi, chief engineer on the LFA’s development program.

“For Lexus, a brand that aims to provide customers with enlightened moments and memorable experiences, the development of a world-class supercar was an indispensable next step.

“The LFA is a thoroughbred supercar, a machine engineered to achieve one single goal – to deliver a supreme driving experience,” he said.

“Over the past decade we have pushed every boundary in the pursuit of this goal. I believe that we have created the most driver-oriented car we possibly could.”

Lexus Australia chief executive Tony Cramb said the LFA embodies the passion that is present within Lexus.

“The LFA captures the desires of a passionate engineering team, and in fact all of those who work for Lexus.

“No matter where the vehicle goes, people stop to admire and discuss the LFA – it is a true halo vehicle,” Mr Cramb said.

“The LFA defines what is expected of a supercar, and outlines the formula for Japanese supercars for the 21st century and Lexus vehicles in the future.

“The LFA symbolises all that Lexus strives to be: innovative, passionate and inspirational. This is just the beginning.”
