21-10-2011 at 08:00: ASBK Title Hunt a Numbers Game

The race for the 2011 QBE Australian Superbike Championship crown is fast becoming a numbers game.

The series heads to Symmons Plains Raceway as part of the V8 Supercars Falken Tasmania Challenge on November 11-13, but unlike last year, there is still a round to follow.

If Procon Maxima BMW’s Glenn Allerton gets enough points on the board, he could secure the title at the penultimate round.

He must score at least 35 points in order to build an unassailable lead over Team Honda’s Jamie Stauffer and i-Style Natural Aprilia’s Ben Attard, who sit locked in second – 263 points plays 196 on current standings.

Allerton, the 2008 champ, could get the job done in any number of ways.

Two podium places would wrap it up, as would a race win and a simple race finish.

The momentum is certainly on his side, but in the world of motorsport, little is certain until the chequered flag is waved.

Just ask Wayne Maxwell, the current form rider after winning the non-championship MotoGP event at Phillip Island, as well as the previous ASBK round at Queensland Raceway.

The Team Honda rider crashed out on the first lap of the final round while in the box seat for the 2009 championship, and knows just how unpredictable the game can be.

“I’d made a charge from 40-odd points back and got to the point where I won a lot on the trot and had one hand on the trophy,” said Maxwell.

“The crash took me out of contention and shows just how quickly your luck can turn.

“We’re building up momentum after Queensland and the strong run at the GP, and although the title is almost mathematically out of reach I won’t be taking my eye off the ball.

“The run home at Tassie and then Phillip Island  will be super competitive, and after a season of development I expect that there will be any number of guys that could take wins.”

The Superbike and Prostock grids will combine for the two feature races at Symmons Plains next month, with the Phillip Island Grand Final, a multi-discipline motorcycle spectacular, following the week later.
