19-09-2011 at 08:00: Yamaha’s Australasian Safari

Yamaha Motor Australia will enter a two rider team into the 2011 Australasian Safari. Longreach Yamaha dealer Rod Faggotter and experienced South Australasian off road campaigner Shane Diener will lead the Yamaha charge on the fabled WR450F in what is Australia’s toughest and longest off road event.

This years’ event will see competitors, in both two and four wheeled divisions, leave Hillary’s Boat Harbour in Perth for an eight day adventure in some of Australia’s rugged and remote bushland as they head north to Geraldton, inland into the WA goldfields and down to the finish at Kalgoorlie. The Australian Safari is Western Australia’s premier motorcycling event and held in high regard within the motorcycle industry.

Competitors travel up to 700 kilometres per day spending eight hours in the saddle as they work their way around a course using only the route maps provided by event organizers the night before. So, not only do riders have to read the unforgiving terrain of the WA outback at speeds of up to 170km/hr, but they must do it while reading their route sheets mounted on their handlebars.

It is a race of speed, skill, athletic endurance and mechanical perfection. Each day trail sections lead to special tests where riders must focus all their energies on riding at the edge of the envelope on unfamiliar terrain. Eight days of physical and mental punishment wears on even the fittest warrior while machine preparation and construction have a huge say in the overall result.
