09-09-2011 at 07:00: V8 Supercar Drivers Hit The Dirt Once Again

The two bright orange Colorado’s, which make up the 2011 PWR Holden rally team, will compete for victory in the 2011 Australasian Safari. Defending champions Craig Lowndes and Kees Weel will be joined by former V8 Supercar driver Paul Weel and seasoned navigator John Panozzo to make up the two car team that will head to the Western Australian outback to take part in the grueling Safari spanning over seven days.

The latest edition to the team is a brand new Colorado that has been completely rebuilt to race spec. The Colorado, which has been modeled off the 2010 winning Colorado, also features the 6litre LS2 V8 with Alcon ventilated discs and 4 piston calipers. A 6 speed Hollinger gear box & 350L custom designed Fuel cell will make this car as tough as the 2010 winning Colorado.

“When designing the cooling package for the Coloardo we used similar technology that we developed for the VW Touareg that took out the first three places in the 2011 Dakar” said team owner Kees Weel.

Father and son team Paul and Kees Weel will drive the new Colorado and Craig Lowndes and John Panozzo will take control of the 2010 winning Colorado. There will be no “team orders” and whilst both vehicles are built to take victory there can only be one winner.

In the Safari, nothing is predictable due to the nature of the course and with the conditions varying greatly to what you get in a V8 Supercar Lowndes is optermistic about the event and his Coloardo.

“Although the Colorado handles very differently to a V8 Supercar you quickly get used to your vehicle in the Safari…as you are covering such large distances in each section” said Lowndes.

Starting on Thursday 22nd September at Hillarys Boat Harbor the contestants will travel over 3700 km through the harsh Western Australian outback finishing 7 days later in historic Kalgoorlie.
