26-09-2011 at 08:00: Renault Revs up for Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge

Renault has not only signed up as a sponsor for the 2011 Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge, to be held in Tasmania from 7-11 December, but it is sponsoring the elite professional Garmin team from France, which has a very strong chance to take out overall honours in the event.

The Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge, which returns after a three-year hiatus, will also showcase the introduction of the new Renault Koleos SUV, which will be used as support vehicles by the organisers throughout the lead up to and during the event, as well.

The Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge comprises 5-day and 3-day elite events for serious professional athletes who live for their competitive mountain-biking, kayaking and running. The event takes place in the midst of the beautiful Tasmanian wilderness.

A one-day Challenger Cup will be held on the last day of the 5-day event for extreme sports enthusiasts who want to be part of this increasingly prestigious and challenging event. The 6-hour challenge comprises mountain-biking, running and paddling.

Renault will have the elite French team Garmin competing in both the Van Diemen and Ambassadors Cups at this year’s challenge.

Team Garmin has a history of endurance adventure races including “Dream Raid” in New-Caledonia in 2008/2010, and more recently “Oxygen Challenge”, and “Red Bull Elements”.

Team Garmin has a multi-disciplinary skill set which ranges from mountain-biking and running to kayaking, and orienteering.

“We demonstrate our skills throughout the year on a variety of distances and disciplines, from trail running races of 60km to 3-day adventure races,” says Team Manager, Sébastien Camus.

“The most important thing for us however is to train, travel, compete, and win as a team. It’s all part of the adventure.

“Being able to participate at the mark Webber Tasmania Challenge has been a dream of ours for many years, and we thank Renault Australia for finally turning this dream into reality.

“We can’t wait to arrive in Tasmania and challenge ourselves through its iconic landscape, meet the other competitors, event organisers and partners.” Sébastien says.

“We are delighted to have this elite team come to Australia to represent Renault in this year’s Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge,” says Chris Brown, Director of Marketing at Renault Australia.

“Given their experience in endurance adventure races, Renault stands a real chance to take out this year’s event and that is very much in line with our brand’s competitive spirit,” Chris says.

The Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge provides an exciting experience for all competitors, from elite to beginner. The course takes competitors on a journey across nearly 350 km of Tasmania’s most stunning scenic locations. The event also raises funds for selected Australian charities.
