As part of a combined Media Day and test session prior to the 2011 Fuchs Australian Nationals, the West Australian set a stunning 5.779 ET* at 250.18mph to raise the bar to a new height prior to the commencement of qualifying this Friday. “The planets were certainly in alignment for that one,” Robin admitted. “It is only testing though, but it gives us a good indication of where we’re at before qualifying starts on Friday. It all helps – someone once told me that the more testing you do the luckier you are, so it can only assist our program.” Judd’s best came at 4:37pm with track temperature at just under 100 degrees and humidity ideal. “My first run was in the morning, and the second at about 2:00 saw a 5.96 but I had to pedal it a bit because it started to smoke around the 60 foot mark. The track was still a bit green, but we got the clutch right for the last one and it hooked up nicely. “It also gave us a good idea of how the car will run with a bit of smoke and tyre shake, so it will be a nice starting point. “I’m pretty happy if that’s how the track runs this early in the week,” he said, “but as always, conditions will change, you just have to be able to move with it, so that will be the challenge.” Title-rival and western Sydney local Maurice Fabietti (Holden Trade Club Monaro) admitted that whilst the track conditions weren’t perfect, that may have aided Judd’s time. “Sometimes when it’s a little gritty it can work in your favour with traction, because too much bite [grip] can pull the engine down and that robs of you of speed,” the reigning national speed record holder (250.51mph/403.15kmh) admitted. “It will make for an interesting weekend though, I can’t wait to get in and have a crack myself.” Whilst Judd’s time is unofficial as it was set in testing, it does signal what could be another stunning year for Top Doorslammer in Australia, and may well revive the battle for outright supremacy between Australia and the US. “That’s a tough one,” Fabietti admitted. “Currently the record in the US is for a car which doesn’t meet the Doorslammer rules, but is considered similar (Pro Modified) in the US – it isn’t a fair comparison though because they run an ‘Outlaw’ engine which has no restrictions, yet despite that, their record is just 5.73, so we’re right on them..” * the official Top Doorslammer ET record at Sydney Dragway is held by reigning champion John Zappia with a 5.828 set in May 2009. The 2011 Fuchs Australian Nationals doubles as Rnd#1 of the ANDRA Pro Series, and the Rocket AllStars. Action gets underway with the first qualifying sessions scheduled for 9:00am Friday morning (September 9), with the Pro Series cars on track first at 3:00pm. Pro Series competitors (Top Fuel, Top Alcohol, Top Doorslammer, Top Bike, Pro Stock, Pro Stock Motorcycle) will be on track again for two qualifiers on Saturday, with the first of the semis from 2:00pm on Sunday afternoon, before the finals start at 3:50. Perth’s Robin Judd has firmed his odds of taking a third straight Australian Nationals title at Sydney Dragway this weekend (September 9-11) after setting a stunning elapsed time [ET] in testing at the Eastern Creek venue on Thursday afternoon in his Aeroflow Studebaker Top Doorslammer.^ Back to top ^
