27-09-2011 at 12:00: From Sickness to Second

19 year old go-karting racer Sam Kelly returned to the kart track after three weeks off due to illness and managed to pull a podium.

The first of the Sunday’s races had Kelly starting in third. After a good start he moved to second and held on until a small mistake cost him the place. Finishing third in his return race was a strong effort for Kelly after the time off.

Race two began with Kelly starting from forth. Pushing hard throughout the race, Kelly fought strongly and made his way to third. Holding off a hard charging forth unfortunately let the gap open between Kelly and second and his meant he had to settle for third.

The pre final proved to be a challenging race for Kelly. Starting in third, Kelly pushed a little too hard in the opening laps and made a few small errors. Losing time left him under pressure from forth place racer but Kelly put his head down and opened a gap between himself and forth. By the chequed flag Kelly held onto third leaving him in a good starting position for the final.

Sunday’s final was fast approaching and Kelly was ready for his first final in three weeks. Starting in his finishing position from the pre final set him up for a strong performance. When the green flag dropped Kelly was passed and pushed into forth. After moving back in the order Kelly kept his head down and pushed. A few laps in saw first and second come together opening up the track for Kelly to grab second.

While pushing hard Kelly could not catch first but managed to hold onto the second place putting him on the podium in is comeback.

“I was happy to finish on the podium after three weeks out with illness,” said Kelly after the final.

“To come in second and be only two tenths off the leaders was something I was happy about and hopefully is a sign that I’m moving forward.

“I think some of these results prove that good equipment makes a lot of difference and I am confident that if I can get some good equipment and I can make my way to the top.

“I’d like to thank Securatrak, Mark Holmes for his support, The Mansfield Hotel, Speed FM and Australian Driver Magazine for all their support. I’ll keep working hard on and off the track to work my way to the top”.
