12-09-2011 at 07:00: AMAC Motorsport Set For Malaysian

Australia will have only one entry in the outright GT class of this weeks Malaysian Merdeka Endurance Race (MMER) with Andrew McPherson, Mike Reedy and Mark Williamson driving the AMAC/Kwikmit Motorsport Mosler MT 900 R.

To win, the Australians will have to beat the strongest field in the eleven year history of the race, with 49 cars competing, headlined by the Belgian Audi outfit with two very strong teams in their Audi R8 LTS’.

The Swiss current Le Mans champion Marcel Fassler will be banking on the experience of team mates Frank Biela from Germany a three time Le Mans champion and compatriot Marco Werner a two time winner.

Belgian Audi also have a strong driver line-up in their second entry, it being for  Canadian born Chinese touring car driver, Darryl O’ Young at the helm of the R8 LTS, ably supported by Seiji Ara from Japan by his side and Malaysia’s very own former Formula One driver, Alex Yoong.

Team owner McPherson is currently at the top of his game putting in some eye catching performances in both the Mosler and team Lotus Exige, while his two co-drivers are both very experienced international campaigners.

A highly respected driver coach, Reedy is an accomplished driver, both at home and abroad where he raced Formula Ford throughout Europe, the Vauxhall Lotus Championship in England and was the Test and development driver for the new Formula Vauxhall Junior Racing Car.

He also raced in the Asian Formula Renault series, but perhaps his career highlight was representing Australia in the Formula Ford World Cup, and won the 1992 World Team Cup for Australia with team mates Neil Cunningham and Russell Ingall.

Williamson, a former Volvo factory driver in Super Tourers seldom races in Australia these days, instead he competes in Asia where he won the Aston Martin Asian GT Cup in 2009, finished equal on points in last years Aisia GT4 Cup in an Aston Martin GT4 V8 Vantage, and is currently on top of the points in the same series this year, again in the Aston Martin.

The Australian team have the advantage of having competed in the 2010 MMER, when McPherson drove the Mosler with Reedy and David Wall who was unavailable this year, however his replacement in Williamson who has never competed in the 12 hour race brings with him a wealth of experience of racing at the Sepang circuit.

Reedy said they learnt a lot from competing in the race previous, and were confident they had overcome the problems that hampered their run in 2010, most of which were heat related.

“A build up of heat in the engine bay caused a meltdown on electric’s, the cause of  which has been rectified. Also dealing with the cabin temperature which was in excess of 62 degrees Celsius was another issue, so the team have developed an air conditioning system which should make life easier for the driver.

“We also had major problems with tyres, as we had been running Pirelli’s in GT Championshipo events, but it was compulsiory to use Michelins in Malaysia, and they didn’t suit the Mosler at all.

Practice for the MMER gets underway on Monday and continues throughout the week ahead of qualifying on Friday and the race start on Saturday at 2.00pm AET.
