02-08-2011 at 08:00: Sports Cars Turn it on for Fans

Lakeside Park continued its 50th anniversary celebrations over the weekend of July 23/24, with a thrilling two days of racing, regularity and displays titled the Festival of Sports Cars.

The third of Lakeside’s 50th anniversary celebration race meetings, the Festival of Sports Cars saw more than 100 classic and modern sports cars line up in seven categories for two days of superb on-track action.

The weekend was designed as a tribute to the Lakeside’s rich history of sports car racing, which stretches the full fifty years and includes highlights such as John French’s Australian GT Championship win in 1962 and Bap Romano’s stunning championship victory in 1984.

The fastest lap of the weekend went to F3 Championship driver Steve Morcombe in his blisteringly fast Chiron LMP3-05, with a very swift 50.71 seconds – that’s an average speed of 171kph. Unfortunately Morcombe misjudged the Eastern Loop in race three of the invited sports category, ending his day and handing the category win to Australian GT Championship driver Tony Quinn in the Aston Martin DB9RS. Quinn and son Klark staged an epic battle in the two VIP Pet Foods liveried GTs, with Klark pipping his father’s best time but Tony holding onto track position to take the silverware. By Sunday afternoon the Quinns had the mighty GTs lapping in 52 seconds.

Best individual effort of the weekend must surely go to Brendan Whittaker who entered cars in both the PLR Sports and Clubman and Production Sports categories and took out both groups. In fact, so dominant was Whittaker’s display he won six races from eight starts!

The Alfas and Ferraris also put on a gripping show for fans, with tight battle packs fighting tooth and nail in both categories all weekend. In the end experienced Ferrari racer Charlie Clements took the group one honours, while group two was declared a tie for first with New South Welshmen Bill Magoffin and Alf Musemici sharing the spoils.

Several racing legends were on hand for the occasion, with Kevin Bartlett steering a La Barata Tiger Shark at cracking pace in the Clubman group, sports car great Dennis Geary watching the action and Grand Marshal John French presenting the trophies.

The final event scheduled to mark this year’s golden milestone of 50 years is The Lakeside Classic Festival of Touring Cars, August 12-14.
