17-08-2011 at 11:00: Pedders Racing Proton out Classed Opposition

The Pedders Racing Proton team headed by Grant Phillips left the comforts of Bendigo on Wednesday (10th August) night and headed north to Warwick in Queensland to take on Round 3 of the Australian Manufacturers Championship at the Shannon’s Nationals – Morgan Park and came home victorious.

The team of 4 took turns in driving the 1500kms and arrived shortly after lunch on Thursday. After unloading the Proton, much of the equipment and a walk of the track with Team Kirkham it was time to find the accommodation in sleepy Stanthorpe thanks to our friends at Bartercard.

Friday saw the team out on the track for 3 practice sessions. The first session was done on the old tyres that had seen more than 8 hours of track time at Phillip Island and soon showed they were not up for the task.

The second and third practice were done on new Yokohama semi slicks which saw times tumble as Phillips gained a greater appreciation for the track and it’s flowing corners.

Saturday gave the team another practice session before qualifying and then the first 1 hour race of the weekend. Phillips took pole position in class and 16th position outright for the start of race 1.

The first race started well with Phillips almost gaining a position into turn one, however the Kirkham’s Ford Fiesta was just too strong and held the race line to edge Phillips out. It was smooth sailing from there on with the Pedders Proton leading it’s only other rival in this weekend’s event by more than 3 seconds per lap. The smaller Toyota Yaris driven by Paul Nelson fought hard but just wasn’t able to match the versatility of the Proton which took out 12th place overall and 1st in class.

Sunday saw a change in weather with overcast conditions altering the team’s plans for tyre pressures. The colder track conditions meant that tyre pressures would remain relatively the same as one of the key concerns from Saturday’s race was with slippery tyres.

Race 2 saw The Proton start from 12th place and put Phillips right amongst the action. The little Proton plugged away not missing a beat for the entire race and managed to climb the leaders ladder to 10th place overall at the end of the final 1 hour race at Morgan Park.

“The Valvoline sponsored Proton has been an amazing little car winning three from three now” said Phillips.

“We were fortunate with the demise of a few cars in the race but this package we have put together continues to prove it’s worth, taking on the much fancied newer cars in class and beating them”  he finished.

The entire team would like to thank Team Kirkham for their support and assistance at Round 3 of the Australian Manufacturers Championship at Morgan Park, Queensland.

The Pedders Racing Proton team are now planning their assault on the next Australian Manufacturers Championship Round at Sandown Raceway, in the Sandown 500 as a part of the Shannon’s Nationals on September 9 to 11th 2011.
