10-08-2011 at 07:00: New Accent. New Motion. New for Australia

Hyundai Motor Company Australia has launched another exciting model to its range, the all-new Accent hatch and sedan, further demonstrating Hyundai’s ‘New Thinking. New Possibilities.’ philosophy.

The all-new Accent hatch and sedan are positioned in the light car segment, offering modern design, surprising interior space and an abundance of comfort and safety features while maintaining the delivery of advanced technology, fuel efficiency and performance.

Following the ix35 compact SUV, i45 mid-sized sedan and recently launched Elantra compact sedan, Accent is the fourth Hyundai car to join the Australian line-up showcasing the company’s signature “Fluidic Sculpture” design language. Designed at Hyundai’s Namyang R&D Centre in Korea, the exterior lines project a futuristic, dynamic, and sleek stance, making Accent striking and distinctive at first glance.

Accent’s eye-catching sculptured lines are highlighted by Hyundai’s signature hexagonal front grille. The swept-back headlights incorporating a two-piece black bezel design and bonnet character lines provide for a unique look.

The addition of a distinguishing sculptured character line running through the side profile of Accent combined with a cab-forward design and coupé-like sweeping roof line creates the impression of a larger car. Whether in hatch or sedan form, the rear of Accent is modern and uncluttered with the wide rear bumper emphasising volume and stability. The Accent hatch is finished with a sporty looking spoiler.

The all-new Accent benefits from Hyundai’s expertise in interior packaging and craftsmanship, offering a generous and airy cabin design with plenty of space and comfort for driver and passengers alike. The symmetrically designed Y-shaped dash and the metallic and piano-black effect finishes within the cockpit (Elite and Premium variants), deliver a premium high quality finish to the interior.

Stylish elements include a three-spoke steering wheel with fingertip controls, convenient push start/stop button (Premium variants), full iPod connectivity with AUX and USB inputs, integrated Bluetooth hands-free, instrument cluster and Hyundai’s signature blue and white illumination. Stowage features include pocket-type driver’s sun visor, a generous glove box, armrest/centre console and the added convenience of 60/40 split rear fold seats.

Testing was undertaken in Australia for the optimum front and rear suspension combination, together with unique mapping of the control unit on the Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS). The result is an enjoyable driving experience with refined dynamics to handle variable Australian road conditions.

Accent’s relatively long wheelbase contributes to a smooth ride with enhanced stability. A MacPherson strut front suspension with coil springs and twin-tube gas shock absorbers provides a smooth ride and excellent road shock absorption. The rear suspension is a coupled torsion beam axle with coil springs and twin tube shock absorbers, which allows more efficient use of interior space.

The Accent hatch and sedan are powered by a 1.6-litre Gamma petrol engine. The all-aluminium four-cylinder engine delivers a peak power output of 91kW at 6300rpm, and peak torque of 156Nm at 4200rpm.

The 1.6-litre Gamma petrol engine’s most notable feature is its use of Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) to optimise the timing of the air intake. The system operates via an on-board computer, constantly monitoring the engine’s changing needs. The result is a balance of performance, drivability, fuel economy and low emissions. To reduce lifetime operation costs and increase reliability, the Gamma engine features a maintenance-free silent roller timing chain and uses innovative anti-friction coatings such as CrN Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) coating and Diamond-like Carbon (DLC) coating.

As one of an elite group of auto manufacturers who design and manufacture their own transmissions, Hyundai has mated the Accent hatch and sedan 1.6-litre engine to a five-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic gearbox with sequential manual mode. These proprietary transmissions offer slick, smooth gear transitions and further enhance the economy of the driveline.

All-new Accent hatch and sedan deliver the highest levels of safety, achieving a 5-star ANCAP safety rating. Outstanding occupant protection is a core element of Hyundai design with the Accent offering a comprehensive suite of advanced active and passive safety features to ensure driver and passenger confidence.

Active safety is enhanced with the introduction of a segment first Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system.

With VSM, a central ECU harmoniously integrates all the traditional active safety systems in the vehicle including Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS) and Anti-skid Brake System (ABS) with Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS). VSM intervenes alongside ESC to help maintain vehicle control by applying a variable input to steering weight, helping prevent the vehicle losing control in emergency situations, such as when suddenly braking or rapidly accelerating under asymmetric (e.g. wet or slippery on one side and dry on the other) road surface conditions.

The Accent Premium variants debut the introduction of a rear park assist with rear view camera system, working in tandem to increase driver confidence and further augment Accent’s delivery of outstanding passenger and pedestrian safety. Available on the Accent Premium variants, the system operated by a camera at the rear of the vehicle relays images to an 8.4cm colour LCD screen in the rear-view mirror, to guide drivers into position when parking or alert them to objects, which may be otherwise obstructed from view.

Passive safety includes a total of six airbags comprising driver and front passenger airbags, driver and front passenger side (thorax) airbags; and front and rear passenger full-length head protecting side curtain airbags for comprehensive passenger protection. In addition, the use of High Tensile Strength Steel (HTSS) in critical areas throughout the body of the vehicle, increases structural integrity and improves collision impact performance.

The all-new Accent hatch and sedan is available in three trim levels, Active, Elite and Premium; and eight exterior colours matched to a black tone interior.

Exterior colours include solid Crystal White, a range of metallics including Sleek Silver, Clean Blue, Carbon Grey and Red Passion; and three striking Mica options including Ocean Blue, Green Apple and Phantom Black.
