08-08-2011 at 07:00: Legendary Cars to Display & Demo

Two of Queensland racing legend Dick Johnson’s famous touring cars will be on display at Lakeside Park as part of the grand old circuit’s final 50th anniversary celebration, the Lakeside Classic Festival of Touring Cars from August 12-14.

Johnson’s 1978 and 1979 Australian Touring Car Championship Bryan Byrt Ford XC Falcon Coupes will return to the scene of many epic battles. In a rare public appearance, these two valuable pieces of motor racing history will be on display in the Queensland Motorsport Museum in the Lakeside Function Centre for the duration of the Lakeside Classic Festival of Touring Cars.

Fans will also be treated to demo laps of the famous number 17, 1979 XC coupe, with racer Craig Harris (son of the vehicle’s owner John Harris) giving the old girl a run around Lakeside for the first time in more than three decades.

The 1978 car, which now wears the race number 32, was originally Jim Richards’ car.  When John Harris’s Bryan Byrt Ford team needed a new car for Johnson they leased the Falcon from Richards, before eventually purchasing it.

Craig Harris will also race in the Group C/Group A category in a 1980 XD Falcon made famous by Bob Morris and Bill O’Brien. Dressed in its original Channel Seven livery the old 351 V8 XD will certainly bring back some great memories for competitors and spectators alike.

Also on display at the Lakeside Classic Festival of Touring Cars will be Allan Moffat’s iconic 1969 Trans Am Boss Mustang, Norm Beechey’s famous 1970 Australian Touring Car Championship-winning HT GTS 350 Monaro and the late ‘Pete’ Geoghegan’s GTA Mustang.

The Lakeside Classic Festival of Touring Cars will feature a full program of serious racing, plus a regularity trial and a huge Sunday show and shine display. In fact the massive field of Group N historic touring cars is rumoured to be the largest ever assembled in Queensland, with two full grids of 30 cars lining up for battle.
