09-08-2011 at 07:00: Giant Killing Performance

Sydney’s Garth Walden put in a giant killing performance last weekend in the Tilton Interiors Mitsubishi Evo 9, when he finished fourth outright and first of the Australians in the World Time Attack at Eastern Creek.

Before a large crowd, the Japanese defending champion Tarzan Yamada ran an amazing 1m:28.85 sec run, while second outright was the Canadian driver David Empringham in another Evo and third the Japanese racer Mitsuhiro Kinoshita, in the Hankook Garage Revolution RX-7  (1m:30.50sec).

It has been a big year for 29 year-old Walden on the international scene. After rocking the establishment in April when he finished second in the 2011 Radical Masters from 48 starters at Spa Francorchamps, Walden is now making the visiting drivers sit up and take notice.

It has been an extremely successful partnership with Walden and the Canberra based Tilton Interior team, for the Radical Australia workshop manager who won the first two Australian Time Attacks at Oran Park in 2008/09 for the team in another Evo, and then last year in the first World Time Attack at Eastern Creek was eighth.

This year’s fine result was not without its drama’s, for Friday’s first session saw him set a 32.5 second run straight out of the box, but in the second session broke a gearbox.

The car was rebuilt overnight, then in the first session on Saturday the Evo blew a main power fuse after which Walden set his fastest time a 1m:30.8sec, but Walden was far from happy, for he said later her messed up turn 10 when he ran wide, which prevented him reaching the maximum speed on the main straight, subsequently spoiling any chance of a podium finish.

Walden was lucky to set the time he did when he did as his last run saw the gearbox fail again putting an end to any chance of taking third place.
