19-07-2011 at 08:00: Hughes, a Big Improver

The Navybox School of Motorsport Racing Team had only one entry in the weekends Radical Australia Cup round run as part of the Shannons Nationals Motor Race Championships at Eastern Creek.

Arguably Australia’s fastest female racing driver, Sue Hughes drove her Radical SR3 in the Radical Australia Cup, and showed incredible improvement since her last outing at the Creek just over a month ago when competing in the NSW state round, reducing her lap times since then by a massive 2 seconds.

The Shannons round of the Radical Australia Cup attracted nineteen entrants with many top line drivers including defending champion Peter Opie, and three Australian Drivers Championship winners, Tim Macrow and two British imports Jamie Winslow and Ben Barker.

Last weekend’s meeting was conducted in changeable weather conditions over four days with practice on Thursday, qualifying Friday and then a 50 minute race on both Saturday and Sunday, and NSM team principal Mike Navybox opted to miss the first day with Hughes.

Instead the wiley old fox Navybox, recovering well from a recent operation to remove a kidney chose to spend the day at his home base Wakefield Park.

“Mike spent some laps sitting in the car with me on Thursday at Wakefield and this helped so much. So, I took this bit of information into the weekend and this made such a difference,” Hughes said.

“Add to this Mike going over some footage we had of me catching and overtaking another competitor in turn 6 at Eastern Creek, despite the other competitor moving over on me, gave me the confidence to go out and attack more.  Mike just encouraged me all weekend either on the radio or through discussions in the pits.

Hughes, whose Radical is the oldest in the field qualified 16th with a  1m:35.0760 secs, then finished 12th in race one and made it into the ten in race 2, finishing 10th with a very fast  1m:33.7451sec fastest lap.

The next outing for the Navybox School of Motorsport Team will be conducted on the first weekend in September at a Phillip Island GT Championship round.
