13-07-2011 at 12:00: HiLux Milestone Points to Upgrade

Toyota has marked the 700,000th HiLux sale in Australia by announcing substantial styling and safety upgrades for the all-conquering ute.

The three-decade history of HiLux in Australia has produced 370,000 sales of 4×4 models and 330,000 sales of 4×2 versions.

While the sales milestone has just been reached, Toyota will offer the upgraded HiLux range in September.

At that time, HiLux will reinforce its position as Australia’s best-selling ute with the adoption of life-saving anti-skid brakes as standard across the range.

This and other changes have been previewed with the release of an image of the range-topping HiLux SR5 4×4 turbo-diesel double-cab.

The SR5 styling upgrade incorporates changes from the A-pillar forward, including a new front bumper, revised over-fender flares and a restyled bonnet with – in turbo-diesel versions – a relocated air scoop.

The biggest visual change is the addition of a bolder three-bar grille flanked by a pair of new twin-element wrap-around headlights.

Revised styling at the rear includes a newly styled sports bar and clear taillight lenses while the interior gains updates to the seat and door trim.

HiLux customers will have a greater choice of entry-level models with new Workmate variants, while all 4×4 models have an uprated towing capacity of 2.5 tonnes.

Together with a range of other improvements new HiLux is expected to offer even better value, ensuring it will continue to dominate Australia’s ute landscape.

As well as being Australia’s best-selling ute, HiLux is also the country’s top-selling 4WD and the most popular commercial vehicle.

Last year, HiLux topped the sales charts as the best-selling vehicle in Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

Toyota Australia senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner said HiLux had outsold all other vehicles in monthly sales on five occasions.

“HiLux is renowned for being unbreakable – a tough but flexible vehicle that is often used both as a weekday workhorse and a weekend family car,” Mr Buttner said.

“The latest changes will substantially improve the inherent value of HiLux for our customers and further cement its position as one of the country’s most reliable and most sought-after vehicles,” he said.
