04-07-2011 at 11:00: Fraser Coast Sprints

Thousands were expected and they sure came to the first running of the Fraser Coast Sprints, held on the out skirts of Maryborough in Queensland over the weekend (25/26 June).

After the fall of the Wheels on Wide Bay event, the region has seen little to no motor racing, so event organizer and President of the newly formed Black Marques Motor Racing Club pushed hard to set up the Fraser Coast Sprints.

The event saw 150 competitors from as far south as Tasmania hit the roads at the Maryborough Showgrounds with spectators able to see the entire circuit from any location. The action was on from the time the first car hit the track.

Competing cars included MG’s, Datsun 1600’s and Ford Escort’s to later model vehicles such as Subaru WRX’s, Nissan Skylines and Mitsubishi EVO’s. Along with the lengthy list of different makes and models the drivers were just as diverse as the cars they drove.

The event did not only include sprints but also a drifting precession from experienced drifters during the scheduled stops. The drifters pushed hard in every corner to have tyre smoke billow for all to see and put on a spectacular show.

An event of a different kind was being run at the same time as the sprints, round four of the Queensland Motorkhana Championship (QMC) and Queensland Motorkhana Series (QMS). Many drivers from the HSCCQ car club headed up from Brisbane to compete and put on a great display of car control.

Spectators were able to walk around the complex and chat with drivers about their machinery as it was access all areas including the pits. On the side of the pits, a number of car displays showed off many fine examples of older automobiles.

As the action continued into the night The Bobkatz (band) put on a show for all to watch with all this action included in the low admission price. Sunday the action was on again with the winner being crowned late Sunday afternoon.

“It turned out to be one of the most successful meets so far this year and we’re already planning next years,” said Craig Winter.
