28-06-2011 at 12:00: WA Driver On The Podium Asia

Western Australian amateur racing driver Steve Wyatt has made his mark in the opening round of the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli by finishing on the podium at China’s Zhuhai race track last weekend (19 June 2011) behind the wheel of his Ferrari 458 Italia racing car.

The event was the first of the new Asia Pacific series of the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli, which is run as separate championships in Italy, Europe, and North America culminating in the Ferrari finals in Italy at the end of the year when the winners in each championship compete for an overall winner.

In each event there are classes for professional drivers, Pirelli series, and amateur or gentlemen drivers, the Shell Series, and there are two separate races. For the first time this year the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli is using the new Ferrari 458 Italia, with a special racing version developed for the series.

In the first race of the Zhuhai event, Perth-based businessman Steve Wyatt fought strongly for a top place amongst the amateur drivers but was forced into retirement when forced to run wide on a corner. In race two Steve fought back strongly to finish second behind Siwon Ryu from South Korea and ahead of Tiger Wu from Taiwan, rounding out the podium.

“The racing is incredibly close and hard fought,” said Steve Wyatt after the finish.

“This is clearly indicated by the fact a little over a second separated all 20 Ferraris after 21 laps from the front to the back of the field! While we were disappointed to not to finish the first race, the second race clearly demonstrated the potential we have to win our category and I am looking forward to travelling to the home of Ferrari to contest the Ferrari World titles at the end of the year!”

The Asia Pacific series of the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli will be back in action at the Shanghai circuit over the weekend of 24 July. On the same card, the busy programme will also feature sessions for cars entered in the XX and F1 Clienti programmes run by Ferrari’s Corse Clienti department.
