Isuzu Motorsports were struck with some sad news early in the week when the news of the death of former teammate Pelle Wallentheim of Sweden.

Pelle, who was only 51 year young, died of complications following treatment during another battle with cancer.

“We first met Pelle and his co-driver Olle Ohlsson when they came out to do the Australasian Safari in 2007,” Bruce Garland said.

“At that stage he was in remission from a rare form of bone and blood cancer that had kept him in hospital for two years. Like us, he had always wanted to do the Dakar Rally so we teamed up to do it together.

“I built two Isuzu D-MAX utes and we did the 2008 Safari in preparation and then headed for the first Dakar in South America in 2009. We finished 11th and Pelle and Olle 44th after a few dramas.

“While obviously we’re enormously saddened by the news of his death, we are pleased to know we helped him achieve his dream. When you’re up against something like he was battling, you don’t always get the chance to make your dreams come true, so we are really pleased that he did – and we all had a lot of fun along the way.”

A wake to celebrate Pelle’s life will be held at Bruce’s Sydney home next week, with teammates and offroad racing friends all welcome.
