28-06-2011 at 09:00: Events Queensland Boosts Leyburn Grant

The annual Leyburn Sprints on the Darling Downs has won an increase in financial support from the State Government’s events organisation to help promote its historic motorsport weekend in August.

The Sprints, to be run on 27-28 August, will receive $20,000 – a $5000 increase from last year – from the Events Queensland Regional Development Program (EQRDP), assisting it to market the event in southern Queensland and northern New South Wales.

Now in its 16th year as a round-the-houses time trial in the normally peaceful village of Leyburn, the Sprints celebrates the running of the 1949 Australian Grand Prix on a nearby ex-wartime airstrip.

Organisers expect around 200 racing, sports and touring cars, invited on the basis of their historic provenance or appeal, to race against the clock in front of more than 7000 spectators.

The former gold-mining centre, 220 kms south-west of Brisbane, comes alive for the Sprints as competitors and spectators set up for the weekend in the campground, in residents’ front yards and at the roadside.

The Royal Hotel, Queensland’s oldest continuously-licensed pub, which is located close to the starting line and where the host is retired rugby league star Shane Webcke, is the event’s social hub.

Proceeds from the not-for-profit Sprints benefit local community groups and projects, many of which assist in the event’s preparation and operation.

Organising committee President Ann Collins said the EQRDP grant was a valuable contribution to the Leyburn Sprints’ continued growth.

“We have made significant progress in recent times with things such as the re-surfacing of the streets, which are used 363 days of the year for public traffic, and the cost-saving installation of permanent concrete safety barriers,” Mrs Collins said.

“Our program of continuous development ensures the Sprints have a stable future, while additional funding from the EQRDP means we can seek to grow our audience.

“We are already one of the longest-running regional motorsport events in Queensland and a respected fixture in the national historic racing calendar. In particular, our location ensures access to motorsport for rural fans who find it difficult to attend events in coastal centres.

“The Sprints also helps to preserve the rich history of people, cars and events in Australian motor racing and the increased EQRDP is a most appreciated complement to that.”
