24-06-2011 at 10:00: Clements Quietly Confident

Ballina’s Jason Clements will be back on track this weekend driving the Justin Wade owned Neumann Petroleum / Matilda Fuel Network BMW M3 E36 in the third round of the Queensland Improved Production Touring Car Championship at Warwick’s Morgan Park race circuit.

The local garage proprietor is quietly confident of putting in a good performance and picking up more points in the championship race.

“This will be the first time I’ve been on the track since it has been extended, and now its fast flowing corners should suit the BMW,” he said with a wry smile.

“Some of the other drivers have raced on the longer circuit before, but I don’t really consider that a real disadvantage for us, for I have always believed you should pick up a new track within three laps.

The original circuit was 2.1 km’s, but now since the extension it is 3 km’s.

After the opening round of the championship conducted also at Morgan Park, but on the old shorter circuit, the BMW broke a drive-shaft which saw Clements finish the weekend well out of the points.

However a storming run in round two at the famous old Lakeside circuit saw the Ballina driver jump up to third in the championship, and it clearly shows why the improved production category is so popular, for there are three completely different types of car on top of the leader board showing how diverse it is.

Currently leading is David Skillander in his 6 litre V8 Holden Commodore, while second is Aaron Lawrence in his Nissan Silvia turbo and third Clements in the BMW.

“The racing should really be close this week, and as we are now coming to terms with the BMW I think we’ll really be right in it,” said Clements.

Joining Skillander, Lawrence and Clements in the fight for a podium finish should be former Australian champion Justin Coombes in his exceptionally fast Mazda RX-3.

Coombes has only competed in one of the two rounds, so he is currently well out of contention in the championship, but at the same time with his ability and car speed he may be nuisance value for the three leaders.

What will also be in the corner of the drivers mind, is having the fourth round of the championship only two weeks away at Queensland Raceway near Ipswich, meaning they will be hoping their cars get through this weekend unscathed.
